Got a question guys i plan on building a 170 slant the bore on the 170 is the same as the 198 and 225 so can i use the wiseco racing pistons in the 170 they already have the valve reliefs in the piston for the cam i plan on using which is a 490 lift and a 270 duration thanks guys

Will require custom connecting rods

Yes that was my question as well. How are you going to make the combination fit together? Custom rods will be a requirement, I believe.

The Buick 401 nailhead rod would work with those pistons in the 170 block with the 198 crank. That rod is 6.220" long. You would have a deck clearance of about .015" in the hole at TDC. The rods are a little different in width, but I believe they would work. They would also require making the big end diameter smaller, and I believe there's enough meat there to do it. Lastly, they would have to be bushed down on the piston end from .9994 to .901 but that's doable. That rounds off to a 204 cubic inch engine. Would be interesting if those rods will work.

no guys i am using the 170 rods.. and crank.. sorry for mis confusion there.. just uping the compression with a cam

You just keep on going that way. LOL It won't work. That's what we're trying to tell you.

ok.. just a thought so with the cam selection i am making i will have to have value reliefs put in the stock type pistons then. cause the 170 is a zero clearance engine..

I am not certain on that. @Charrlie_S might know. He's built and raced 170s longer than a lot of people on here have been alive. Lets see if he will chime in.

I bought some engine parts from someone, that tried to do almost the same thing. He used the 2.2 turbo pistons, though. 170 block, 170 crank, 170 rods 2.2 turbo pistons, = pistons way down in the hole, somewhere about .170 if I remember right. Then he decked the block to get back to zero deck. So basically has a 170 engine, with a very thin deck surface. I am scrapping the block, and will use the other parts for other projects.

so Charrlie what do you recommend on my build have the over sized pistons fly cut to put value reliefs in the pistons? cause the cam i plan on using is the 490 lift 270 duration. and milll the head for the compression to up it?

Is your plan for a "street, street/strip, or just strip"? You must mill the head to get compression, or get custom domed pistons. Also valve reliefs are a must, with that cam, and a "stock type" replacement piston, does not have a thick enough head to go very deep with the notches. You would have to measure.

plan for a street car with a small stall for the auto and 355 gears in the rear

2800 stall, should work. Just make sure it is really 2800 for a 170 slant. Do you have the converter, yet? What year is the crankshaft, and the trans/converter?

don't have the stall yet the engine and trans is the original one in the 69 valiant i have..... engine never has been rebuilt it has 82,000 miles on the car

OK, just wanted to check that you had a trans that matched the engine. The 170 engine only had the large pilot in 68, and 69, and the 68-69 trans will not bolt up to the 67 and older engines, without a special converter.. I recommend you do not buy a "off the shelf" converter. There are several good converter manufacturers with experiance with the slant six. I use Edge racing converters, myself. Edge Racing Converters, More Horsepower with More Torque Guaranteed! talk to Andre. I think there are better cams then the clifford, but if you already have it, go ahead and use it.

Just a thought, you could call Wiseco, and see if they can move the pin hole, so the piston will work with the 170 rod, and get a price, if they can do it.

thanks Charrlie. this will be the 1st slant i have built up did all my racing engines for my drag racing career but all been the 340 v8 and i will get ahold of both. and i don't have that cam yet either.. who do you recommend on the cams? and with that style of cam do you recommend a 2 bl or do i need a 390 4 bl?
