what does everybody do when looking for parts? if it is a foot operated dimmer switch, you go to napa,az,oboys, aap or wherever. what if part is not made anymore? where do you go now? i see a lot of parts on web when browsing. some are really high dollar. a pair of tail light lenses for a 69-71 dodge truck 90 ea used 220/pair new nos. it makes my wallet hurt. useed is okay most of the time but what if used not readily avail? just curious where people go now.

Nos parts are hard to find and can be quite expensive. I have had bad luck with repop parts or new parts from parts stores. (especially electrical parts from NAPA) I would trust a used part first, then a nos piece simply because of the price and availability. You may be surprised how many parts are still available through Mopar Parts. For example, I have bought Mopar electronic voltage regulators over the counter. I went through 3 from NAPA that overcharged.

Try looking for new, possibly never to be made again 4-door & / or station wagon specific parts sometime....

yes we had a problem with vr. i retired from napa about 6 weeks ago. actually retired from there twice.

I have bought complete cars for a few needed parts in the old days before this interweb thingy was around. Today I scrounge web sites, wander through the back lanes around town, and in neighboring towns and villages. If nothing else it gets me out of the house. Bonus, my wife typically enjoys coming for the ride.

i did look for wagon parts for my 65 coronet sw. needed chrome after guy i had polish it used 36 grit and screwed it up. luckily i found the 7 pieces i needed, but they were not cheap.

You can also find many electrical parts thru Cole Hersee. They been providing reliable world class switching products to the automotive, marine and trucking industries since 1924. Other parts I find at swap meet's or shows like Carlisle.

when buying replacement parts, when buying ahead, as in I don't need the part tomorrow, I tend to price shop between AZ, RA and NAPA, I include the shipping price when considering RA,, It is surprising how the price can range between the three. I usually go with the cheapest, unless the AZ part sports their Duralast Lift Time warranty. Then I go there. I put a Duralast power steering pump on my 83 D150 in 2010, it started dripping oil this past spring ( nine years later) I went back at AZ,
I did not have the receipt and they looked the purchase up in their system and honored the warranty.

If the part is something that is not available, like the inside the dash air conditioning ducts for the same D150, it is prowling around the local pull a parts.
Forums like FABO are also a great source for hard to find parts, then there are swap meets local and the big ones like Carlisle.
Another source is large internet connections like E bay, craigs list and www.car-part.com

Formerly Mitchell's Mopars here in Georgia. Frank's dead now, but his business lives on. People always bitched about his prices, but he HAD the stuff and they STILL HAVE the stuff.

A lot of times , I get the part # on Rock Auto and call one of my local parts stores to see if they have it or how soon to get it .

Remember though, even though NOS parts are technically new and never used, they are getting older everyday. Just because they have sat on a shelf and even in controlled environments all this time, that's a LONG TIME to expect something to still be "good" so take that advice to heart. But I completely understand that on some cars, only NOS will do.

My car is 53 years old so I get parts wherever I can. I figure if something has worn out on my car it’s probably a common part to wear out and everyone most likely is looking for the same thing. But that’s not always the case.
Most of the used parts I get are from FABO - thank you parts car guys!
NOS is great especially for exterior trim and some might say it’s expensive and it is but it’s most often cheaper than getting something re-chromed.
There are a few times someone has made a small batch of some part and I try to get one while I can (273 Commando pie plate, early Formula S lug nuts, ‘66 Valiant lenses, etc...) and to help support whoever is putting in such effort and dollar resources for our cars.
Oh then there’s tires...

For electrical components NOS is usually the best. I have had good luck with standard ignition for ignition switch on my dart sport. Previously removed a napa ignition switch which from day one was rough @ the turn if the key. And not too long after failed.

Parts for duster demon I go out to one of the bins in the sheds. I saved parts for many years for this reason. I knew I would always be working on these cars. You need to just start buying your make cars and stashing the parts. I am so glad the member on this site stood me up on the purchace of all my parts now. Just when you think you are done scratching the itch returns. LOL
