Out of a 72 Duster. Goes in all gears real good, Has the shifter and linkage with it. I also have the shifter handle for it as well. Bell is in good shape, no cracks. Clutch Fork boot is there as well. Lets just say it will need gone through since I'm not very knowledgeable on standard trannys. What would this sell for or should it go to scrap? Thanks all. Photos attached.

That Aluminum Small Block bell housing is worth 250. See them for sale at the swap meets for that, works with 4 speeds too.

Someone may want to go 3 speed on the floor from a wore out 3 on the Tree set up ??

Some earlier manual 3 speeds were a non-syncro first gear. So the 72 probably has a synchronized first gear, so that can be an upgrade for someone who has a non-syncro first gear 3 speed trans.

Quite a few 340 cars were equipped with a factory 3 speed set up.Used one in my swinger for a time while rebuilding my 4 speed. No complaints at all worked great. So yea don’t scrap it for sure someone can use it........Swingn’

Surely someone doing a "correct" resto would want it. They were a good transmission

10-4 to that.....I liked the 3-speed better than the 833 o.d. Unit I used for a while also.....Swingn’

Sorry to have to disagree with all the other posters on this thread, but that tranny and all its other parts is garbage.

Because I think it's important to make difference in the world, I'm willing to have you send it to me and I will see that it's recycled properly.

BWAHAAAA!!!!!!

The bellhousing is worth way more than the transmission. However, the transmission is NOT junk. It's the A230 HD three speed. Worth probably bout 100 bucks if it'll bolt in and work. They're a heavy duty piece and can stand a stout 440. Even still, they just don't bring much because everybody wants a 4 speed. I am actually going to be looking for an A 230 before long.

That's first trans I ever learned to shift on, Behind a 71 slant in a Duster. Had a backwards N pattern with R on top?

They are definitely not scrap!
I had a '71 Demon with the 230 floor shift, 3:23 geared 8 3/4 rear end and a 318, a great combo for sure and a '72 Duster with a 198 slant 6 and the good old 230 3 by the knee, another great combo!
To drive one is to love one.............
If you lived closer, I would try to snatch that one up from you minus the bell housing, I have lots of those.

I remember two gear ratios, something like; the 3.09-1.67-1.00, and 2.55-1.49-1.00
The side-cover A230s were synchronized in all forward gears and the size of those guts is very similar to the A833. They are good, stout, reliable units. They work very well with lo to mid performance, hi-torque engines, and they're good to slam up there until your 4-speed is ready.
Cast-iron Chrysler top-loaders, IMO , were never a contender. Back in the late 70s I was working in a transmission rebuilding shop, and saw hundreds of those come across my bench. I marvelled at how those lo-perf units were built. But I built way more GM 3-speeds than anything else. Also IMO, they were better than the GM pre-Saginaw stuff.
Then they moved me up. I loved that job, always moving me up,up, there was no top in sight.

Yep, worth it to someone. And with a nice original shifter too. Bonus! Start a sale thread and see what happens. Just texted a friend to see if there's a need.

You guys are awesome !!!! This is real cool, maybe Ill send it to the tranny shop for a look see.

IIRC, that BH has a dual trans bolt pattern. An A833 4 speed will bolt up.

I love 3-speed cars.

That said, I have passed on a few for sale over the years because the car owners did not keep the transmission with the car.

Some of them were very tempting, but I like to put stuff back to stock & a lot of 3-speed cars have been modified over the years.

Modifications can be reversed at times, but if the original gear box is gone.......... so I would keep it with the car.

Im interested in the transmission,I have a three on the tree Barracuda that isnt much fun to shift. How close are you to the Indiana border?

Hi There, I already have it at the trans shop for a going through. Alaskan T/A will be able to help you with a transmission, he knows those 3 speed real good and has been a huge help to me over the years.

Back in the day 3 SPD on floor a body with
Lil.318 4bbl, nice cam, headers and SG 3.73
Or 3.91 gears was a great street winner
Amongst the opposition gm leadsleds
And even fords with similar set up.....
Ask me how I know.

(Naturally aspirated of course)

Why not find out what's wrong with it? My 64 Valiant is 3 on the tree and I love driving it.
