I guess for me that was always the skill of driving a clutch car. Leave the line, knowing when to ride the clutch a little to keep the tires from smoking.

Yeah... I ran high 1.50s low 1.60s with my 73 340 4sp... but that was a while ago and when you add a 4” crank and a solid roller and 300 cfm ported W2s and Mcleod RST and spool and drag radials... its worth spending 180$ and a little time trying to prevent breaking the aforementioned parts.
