I'm almost certain my 67 had the tiny pin in place also. I don't think I ever serviced a coupling that didn't have that pin. All were 67 and later though.
I distort the original lid just enough to pop it off so I can reuse it. I haven't needed that wire retainer. I did need to hunt down a new upper bearing when working with a lesser coupling kit. Good luck with yours.
