Speedmaster MidRise Air Intake Manifold
I don't think I have ever laid an intake gasket on a stock head that didn't have a little core shift.
Also, to get the fit right, I "high tack' the gaskets to the head. I then sit the intake on to mark where each gasket is going to be, in relation to the intake, on each side of the intake. Sometimes the left/right sides of the intake are off in relation to the heads as they sit on the block.
You can also see if you need to mill some off of the intake surface while your'e at it.
Although some won't agree, I like to make the ports on the intake a little larger than the heads.
I do agree with the fact that older intakes are usually closer than newer stuff, as long as they have not been butchered by a previous owner.
When I was a kid, in the 80s, I bought a new name brand intake that was too narrow for a 360 I had built. I blamed the intake, but now that I have messed with a lot of LAs, I bet the block height was taller than spec. That was when I was young and "KNEW" everything.
