Nail number one in the electric car coffin, as of right now most of the country use coal, or other fossil fuel to make electricity. Somewhere I saw a picture of a charging station in a remote area, it was powered by a diesel generator. That brings up point two. There is a great deal of our country that is remote, or off enough of the grid it just won't be economically feasible to put charging stations in those areas for quite some times. That brings up point number three. Our current grid can not handle 100 percent electric vehicles, it can't even handle busy air conditioning use in California without resorting to rolling blackouts.
I can’t wait to get some high performance electric conversion parts to hot rod one of my old cars... I would love to commute to work in a AWD 8 second car... best part would blasting away from traffic lights and cops not even noticing.
It's going to be awhile before most people can afford these types of conversions. I have a friend that does conversions, including some very end end vehicles. When we talked about older cars such as our, his comment was that they are too heavy to convert with any real performance without being extremely expensive as of now. If you could get the good performance, then you give up any real range. Here is a link to his shop just to see some of the kind of stuff that he does. Notice most of the cars are smaller light weight builds. Welcome to SHIFT Electric Vehicles
