I'm here
Toying with the thought of chasing my son's Scat Pack, for fun. I figure I'll need high 11's at 113. Trick is, I want to keep the car very streetable and 60 mph a breeze. If I chase him, I will have to spend money, but I'm not going to rob Ft. Knox.
Here is my Duster's current state: '76 Duster, virtually stock 360 (4bbl, headers, and less than 340 camshaft), stock 904 & converter, 2.94's. 26" M/T ET streets. Consistent 13.3's at 99 mph.
  • Plan is change of cam, heads, converter, and gears. That's it. I would like to see what thoughts are out there, cam recommendations, etc? If possible, I'd like to stick with maybe a 3.23 gear. Please share.... thanks

Those shocker heads sound pretty good and affordable! Just might do. The trick!:steering:
I've been look'n at them. So far I like them better than edelbrocks both out of the box. The Maxx Shockers flow better than the ones in the link I posted, but for my goal, I think what I posted is a great choice. Maybe somebody with experience with these will show up :)

I think I have heard Pittsburg racer mention these promaxx heads. He too says they are better/nicer than edelbrock heads.

you don't need a 4'' stroker to run 11's. hughes solid cam and ported iron heads will get you there.

agree. I have 273 adjustable rockers/pushrods. 4" arm isn't even being considered, unless I happened upon the freakish deal of the century, it's not happening.

Do your porting on some 360 castings. You can even use the 1.88 valves if you want.

Strip Dominator.
750 double pumper, not a HOLLEY. I'd do a ProForm before I bought anything with the Holley name on it.
Racer Brown cam, preferably SFT.
Hooker 5204 headers but you need to lose your power steering if you have it.
3.91 or 4.10 gears. I'd want the 4.10's but I like gear. RPM under 7500 doesn't scare me (neither does 9k but I won't spend the time to fix the junk Chrysler oil timing.
Custom PTC torque converter (or a QUALITY brand you like and trust...I only trust PTC and a couple of others and if they don't spec a 4000 stall make them tell you why. 4500 would scare me.

Done.

Start cutting some weight on that 76. There is a lot to lose on a good diet with those heavier sport styles that year. Take that front bumper off and lighten it would be my first on the list. Use the skin and make tour own light weight brackets. Taking things off of the car is free. Every 100 lbs. is at least a 1/10 on a car running 13's. A 9 second car won't gain as much.

Decreasing reciprocating weight gains are much more. Light weight rear tires and wheels, even a lower profile and narrower tire helps. lighter drive shaft. Put a shut off on the alternator. Electric water and fuel pump.

Stop eating bread and potatoes.LOL

Don't get me wrong , my car hasn't performed like it should , but he`s gonna need some gears almost regardless . Ask me how I know ----------
Short of the nitrous .

I say keep your cam ,use your magnum heads change the converter and gears and work it from there . The rpm range is kinda extended with the 323s and you have to make the most power/torque there . Even though i dont always agree with yr ptc has the best value / quality converter. If your rpm range is 3000-5500 or less make the most power you can there .I dont think its going to require a big cam or aluminum heads to get there.

Gears, high stall converter, 2” valves w/ a home port and the cam to match. Those big heads are unnecessary.

How do you know?

Needing gears now myself , dragstrip requires more gear on almost everything . Has always proven itself on 5 diff. hotrods , some serious , some not really that serious .===jmo ,
yours may vary ! LOL

My .02....
If this is the complete level of rework(as in....... you’re changing only those items, and will run 3.23’s)you’re not going to get there.
Especially if you’re serious about
I want to keep the car very streetable and 60 mph a breeze

I’ll enjoy watching how you go about it though.

Thanks, and I agree. But for money sake, this is a list what I have that I'll be using, and a list of possibilities that I have that I could use. Not opposed to buying better heads and better cam.
I will use:
  • Doug headers, they are on the car with 2.5" duals out the back
  • 750 Holley Double pumper, it's on the car now.
  • One of the three intakes listed below
I have and could chose:
  • magnum heads with mild port work by me at home, hughes spring kit
  • magnum edelbrock RPM air gap
  • Weiand Stealth intake
  • LA RPM (non air gap and on car now)
  • LA 360 596 heads home ported by me 1.88/1.60
  • MP 284/484 cam (old grind)
  • 273 adjustable rockers/push rods in case i buy a solid cam.
