I am going to replace the ring & Pinion in a 489 case I have. I will be buying 3:91s but I need someone to recommend a Brand from experience. So much mis-information out there. Price is not the issue. Everyones gears are the best, LOL
Thanks FABO

I have always used Mark Williams Enterprises for axle parts. I run two cars at the track, one of which runs in the mid+ 10's and have never broken a thing. That's going on seven plus years. But that's just me and I do all the setup and building. I did have a pinion nut come loose once and still didn't break anything.

Heres what I found out about Richmond when I searched for who bought them. This came off another blog.

"I'm sure a lot of you know, but for those who don't...I just found out today. I bought a set of their gears thinking that I was supporting an American made product. Get them from UPS today, box has Made in USA printed on it, but I open it up and a Made in India sticker is staring right at me. I also notice the ring has "Excel" stamped into it, which irritated me cause I made a point not to get this "value version." A call to Richmond explains that they were bought out by the same company that owns Motive Gears. The Excel version are the ones that are made in India and are replacing the gears once made in the closed North Carolina factory. The tech I talked to even went so far as to say that Motive and Richmond are now almost identical and pointed out the contact markings to me. The paint coated three teeth completely from heel to toe. USA made gears only contact about half the ring. Which, as was explained to me gave Richmonds their (former) extra strength. The tech translated the production markings and said that I had a set of gears that was one of the first runs of that ratio in India and that the gears must have (obviously) been packaged in the wrong box. He seemed very concerned about this and arranged for a free install kit to be sent to me for the mix up, but agreed that I might as well exchange them for Motives and save some money."

US gears sold by MW states Made in America. Is that not the case? Maybe call for a Black Friday sale

Thank you all. Seems like US Gear is the one for made in USA and support. Dont want my money going to an overseas company.

Produced in USA....? you can produce a gear in America from an India casting.....Not saying that is the case here though.
"A Made in USA mark is a country of origin label that indicates the product is "all or virtually all" made in the United States. The label is regulated by the Federal Trade Commission"
Yukon gear...made in Alaska! (not)

I do know that as coming from the industrial computer business, we built products with a lot of foreign content but because we did all chassis design and manufacturing, assembly and testing here in Houston we had enough US content to call it made in America. Yes castings can be made anywhere but the machine work and quality inspection is what I worry about. Thanks for pointing that out because a lot of people may not know that.

Motive 3.91 gears in my Dart Sport. Have used them in my race car in the past (circle track) and never had an issue.

US Gear ( NOT US Standard Gear ) ring and pinions are made in the USA and are an excellent product and my first choice -- Richmond exists in name only ,, it was bought out by Motive Gear several years ago -- Motive Gear ring and pinions (premium orange box gear ) are made in Italy but an excellent product -- currently rebuilding a 10 bolt Gm axle and the owner insisted on a Richmond gear set ,, came in a Richmond box with richmond part number but gear inside was made by Motive Gear in Italy according to the small i.d. label on the box.

Never broke a US gear or had a noise problem. No question they get my business when the need arises....

In the past had good luck with mopar performance gear set. Not sure who it was made by. I don't know if they still are available.

I bought a nitro sure grip for my 8.75.
One year later and a couple hard launches I busted the nitro housing.

Switched to the Eaton tru track.

As for gears I bought a set of 4.30s second hand with no issues. (Unknown brand)

I used Strange Engineering, they have a sale going on, 10% off and free freight.

Strange has Motive and US Gear. Sales looks good.
Thanks all looks like US Gear has my vote. At least Strange tells you where they are made. Motive is made in Italy according to them.

Will place an order with Strange tomorrow. Again thank you all for your guiding comments. This will be my first time setting up gears and I have read so much material I'm afraid to do it, everything else I have dome in my 65 years has turned out good so I will be giving this a try. If you have any articles I should read please list for me.
FABO Best there is

Getting close to doing the gear swap. Anyone ever use the Proform pinion depth tool? I cant afford the T&D universal set at $500. Two different ways to approach the depth.
Thanks FABO

Round bar and a longer vernier caliper works.

Put bar on the bearing saddles spanning across.

Measure from top of bar down to bottom.

Subtract your bar diameter.

Add half the diameter of the bearing.

Now you have a spot to start

$100 or less vernier plus the cost of a piece of round bar. Bigger diameter the better (less flex)
