GTS or GSS

No the "m code" is only for 1969. "M" is the vin letter that tells the engine in the car. The "M" stands for 440 for A body and 440 six pack for B body.

I am very aware of the M being in the vin . The fifth digit. For 68 and 69 a-body’s. But in 68 there were M- code dart. There were only 48 or 50 made. So if you know anyone with a 1968 GSS m- code dart . But remember it will have to have a M in the vin tag. Here is what it will look like
LS23M

So, it would read "LS23M"8"...?

I don't know if they all were sold my Mr. Norm. The Bee leaver that Ron Mancini drove and the GTS that Landy had were both M code Darts. Reggie Jackson had one in his collection before one of his storage buildings burnt down.

And on another note in 69 M codes (Darts I bereave only) not all had the m in the vin, a few had the option code on the venter tag for the 440.

Rusty/rlc.. did the '68's actually have an "M" in the VIN after they were sold from Mr Norm?

Read post #18. That explains it a bit further. There were 50 of the cars, not 6. They way I am reading that article, The 50 cars were chosen off the assembly line by Chrysler, then eventually ended up at Grand Spalding, after going through Hurst. That's how I am reading it. Says only 12 of the 50 exist today and that sounds about right. I remember reading about these cars in Hot Rod Magazine when I was a kid.

A quote from Street Muscle magazine. 12/29/2012
"And, like the 1967 Dart GTS 383, the 1968 Dart GSS served as inspiration to Chrysler because, for 1969, Chrysler released the 440 as a regular factory offering for the Dart GTS (as well as for the Plymouth Barracuda). Dodge built 660 GTSs with the 440, giving the rest of America the opportunity for an overpowered compact. It would be another two years until Mr. Norm would offer another unique car with the 1971 Demon GSS, but the 340 Six-Pack didn’t inspire Chrysler the way the GSS did."

There is a great discussion on a wanted thread and to be fair tho the OP the conversation needs moved here. Have at it guys.

Well this is starting to make some sense to me. A buddy sent me pics 5-6 years ago of a friends 68 dart and swore it was an M code. I told him that only 69 were Mcodes. I was wrong...again.
I cant remember if he sent me a pic of vin or fendertag with the M in it.
Would M be in fendertag for 68 or 69?

Good question. M code is listed in my Galen books a "special order" for 68 and 69. There are 48 LS23M8B 440-4 68 Dart GTS's listed as " Mr.Norms GSS". No Mr. Norms GSS's listed in 69. No other 440 powered Darts listed for 68.

Yeah from what my buddy said(and supporting pics) and from what you are saying, he has or his buddy has a GSS, so it would be a 68.
5 years ago it was for sale....:BangHead:

Steve/TMM...that was kinda my question. I have always thought that an "M" designation for an A body could only be for a '69 Dart/ 'Cuda. Over the years, I've heard mention of '68 "M" codes. My question has been (which I've never gotten a proper answer to) is "Did Chrysler issue factory VIN tags with an "M" as the engine digit in 1968 specifically for Mr Norm's cars?...and were '68 Barracuda's included?

No problem. A lot of great questions and interesting information. I switched the discussion here to be fair to @rlcbit. I didn't know if I could even do it but it worked out ok.

I'm probably just adding to the confusion Dar, but I know the date code was 68 AND there was an M designation. I just cant remember if it was on a fendertag or a vin.
