I have a 408 stroker short block for my 69 dart. I'm trying to order everything i need to finish this engine finally, and i have a melling high volume oil pump I'm going to order with a stock 5 qt center sump oil pan. will it work with stock mopar pan or do i get a 6 or 7 qt pan? or just go with a stock oil pump? the car will get no track time just street use.

The HV pump will work fine with the stock pan.

If you use the HV pump get the mopar performance intermediate shaft.....

I was cleaning my shop yesterday and found a brand new Melling M72HV in a box under a bench...it's like found money!!!

He states HV does nothing without a larger pickup.

Without proof, I'm a non believer. I don't buy that the stock pump pumps "all it can" through the stock pickup. At least not without concrete data. "He" doesn't provide "that".

I can say without a doubt that I've witnessed engines pump "way more" oil with an HV pump retaining the same stock pickup as with a stock pump. Case and point. A 360 in a 71 Dart I had years ago. Before I built it, it had the stock "drizzle" of oil to the rockers and valve tips. After rebuild and HV oil pump, it squirted oil all over the headers.

...stupid question: with a HV oil pump and stock pan, is there any concern of running the pan dry? I want to eliminate my deep sump 6-7 qt pan and put a stock one on for clearance issues. This deep sump sucks being this low....lol
Thanks in advance.

Run a Kevko oil pan a little larger than stock with all the baffles and trap doors with good ground clearance.

i've run HV pumps in stock small and big blocks pans and have never had any issues.

Just to note get the pick up aswell as your stock one will sit too high but by the looks of your pan yours will be too big . You will need to mock it up as the mounting tab don’t sit too well on the cap bolt or stud .

Noted.....I was assuming I would need a different/stock pickup....thanks

Rusty, with the HV pump and the stock sized pick up tube you likely get more flow and pressure at low RPM’s. It would be at higher perhaps max RPM that a restriction to flow would occurr that a larger pick up tube would resolve.

Use only milodon The mopar performance are not near as strong. Read the description. The hex on the Mopar shaft does not hold up nor does it wear that well in the bushing. Use Steel for flat tap bronze for roller cam. The mopar performance do not hold up to RPMs with a HV pump. I have bought many for over $250 from mopar never again. China junk

No. That's one of the biggest myths ever. Besides Obama.

I don't know. Maybe so. But how many of these guys are going to hold their engines at "that high" an RPM on a street car for "that long"? I do suppose as cheap as the pickups are, go ahead and get one, but what about the threaded hole in the oil pump? Same size.

1st one is a hallow pin
Second one a review says the pattern is wrong, big block reverse probably.. cause thats what i got as well one time.

Ive never had the MP fail me, though only used it with solid cams and hv pump/std pump.
Ive seen some later stock version came pinned, just not tapered and hardened..and still smaller diameter mid way up.
