This is another one of those "buddy" deals that bit me hard. I've always wanted a good 70's style panel/fade paint job. It is definitely not what Ive got here. The s.o.b cleared over the mess to boot. I sanded the crap out of it last year to break through the clear coat with the hopes of it at least looking like an old weathered paint job. That didn't really work either. I have no experience in painting and am on the fence wether to repaint the whole car solid orange and get a factory stripe kit or tape off the botched panel job and work with someone to salvage it. Any solid advice would be greatly appreciated. Jeff

Just my opinion, but unless you know someone who can do a good fade paint job, you'll probably just be disappointed again
If you have your heart set on a fade paint job, wait until its safe to be in a group again, and find someone at a car show that has a paint job you like and ask them who did it for them, and be prepared to pay the $$

OUCH!! I can see the idea you were going for. If you stand back and squint it looks better.

I've seen fade jobs before and understand they are hard to do even for a good painter. Be patient, shop around.

Semi-gloss black all of the unhappiness. Decorate from there.
Or better yet, think about the decoration before the blackout. I think just blacking those areas out will give you some perspective. Might blackout the whole roof.

I’m all for the 70’s look, get a low rider painter.

Or vinyl wrap it for now.

IMO it's not enough of the look you want..... You need someone who has the right mindset and vision to get the 70's look. Yours is no where near that yet. But I like where you were going with it.... Maybe someone can continue with what was done.....

I appreciate all the replies folks.I did layout the design and still like it. I also dig that this style of paint is appealing to a select few which is cool. It was an attempt to break the norm of single color with factory stripes which is safe but looks killer.

Prob gonna get flamed for this, but I kinda like it. Goes with the wheels IMHO. Slap a bunch of 70s racing parts decals on it, make up a fake sponsor or 2, add some fake patina, and give it a fake racing pedigree. I think with todays camera filters you can even fake grainey old photographs, or do em in black n white. Maybe tape an old mopar prostock scoop on there just for pix. You may be able to find somebody who can kinda "fix" what's there. Or sand all that **** off and primer it.

The roof trunk don't look that bad, at least from pics.
Maybe can temporarily experiment with pin stripe tape 1/4-1/2" wide.(easily removed). Thinking silver? Just to hide that uneven edge of orange on sides of car or all.
And still have the look you are looking for....Just a thought

Obviously the painter didnt smoke enough weed before he entered the booth.

i get the idea with the scheme, the execution just wasnt there.

i would start wet sanding, until the crooked stripe is really faded out. Lots of work by hand but it could dull the stripes.

I agree with mycuda, have someone pin stripe or paint a complimenting color around his supposed fade. You might try it with masking tape and colored tape or paper.

Repaint it. I understand what you described, I don’t understand what I see. Go for the solid orange and black stripes.

Heres a fake sponsor for you to add to it.

Maybe a good airbrush guy can ad to the existing paint scheme and achieve your fade.

I agree, needs some lettering and decals to break it all up and take your eye away a bit. Research some vintage pics. Have fun with it!
