I have been working mostly since 12 years old or earlier. Paying into the system since the age of 13 as a Chef to start and it was very rewarding. Never had an issue finding paying work, but not always paying into the government system. Went a few years maybe as unrecorded as a Mason in the early 80's. Since then have always been contributing. As I find myself on furlough know, I am not at all ashamed to ask for some return. How do you feel about it? I have 32, almost 33 years in my current job for the same company. I am 57 so do the math.

No shame at all for anyone. It's not welfare, it's insurance and you paid for it. No different than wrecking your car and using that insurance.

I collected unemployment once in my life for 6 months when I was unjustly fired from a job and my teenage son and I were on our own. Worked since I was a kid and always have. But hey that's what I paid into it for and I had no shame in my game collecting for that six months of my entire life of contributions...

Take what you can get. You will be back to work before you know it and paying the piper.
and the piper will be much bigger.

You deserve it, as stated you have been paying into the system and now you need the return. that is what it is for. I think it speaks volumes about yourself that you feel this way. Again, this is why you have been paying into the system. I hope you find work soon and all the the best to you

By far it wasn't my proudest moment when I ask for it, but it is what it is...
Has nothing to do with being proud.
If it did, none of us would collect social security or use medicare.

It's your money. They have just been holding onto it for you.
I'm 55. Have collected UC twice. First time got pushed out of a job of near 27 years by new management. 2nd time different company closed our very profitable site to invest funds somewhere else. I did my part to find employment ASAP, but collected every dime I could in the meantime.

I'd not hesitate in these times to take UC. This type of situation is what it is for.

BTW, just to correct one thing... employees pay $0 into the UC funds. It's all paid by employers.

Yes, but...Paid on your behalf, just like them paying part of your medical or any other benny. Part of your compensation for working.
