I just got done putting my 8.8 back together after shortening it and when I put the axels and the clips back. I noticed that when I push on the axle there was a noticeable clunk so I pulled the cover back off and I can see the carrier is sliding back and forth it looks to me like the movement is in the bearing I'm thinking bad bearings but I'm not 100 percent sure. I have not disassembled or removed the carrier from the housing until yesterday when I found the problem I hadnt even broke the caps loose. But I did pull them to try and get a better idea of what going on. I have three videos I uploaded to YouTube I will share the link to help you help me lol.

The very last video is the best one the caps are off the carrier and you can see the bearing movement

Either bearings are bad, or someone installed that carrier without shimming it properly. I would pull it add some new bearings and shims to get it within factory tolerance.

I'm thinking bearings from the looks of it when I got it I dont think it had ever been appart but who knows the shims appear to there.

"Some"shims are there, but obviously not enough and in the right places.
If the bearings look good the only thing you can do is to shim it where it needs to be.
The bearings would have to be pretty bad to let it move that much.

Ok so here is where I'm at I pulled the carrier out the shims have noticable wear on them there is a deep groove in the drivers side one. So I pulled my spare rearend apart and checked it, it had no movement at all it was so tight it was a ***** to get out. I used the shims and braces out of it and it's still loose side to side. Is possible the matting surface on the carrier is worn or maybe where the bearing meets the race? The movement is between the race and the bearing for sure tho. Here are some photos the bearing looks bad to me its chewed up pretty good

The shims outboard the bearings are selective fit try swaping them and see if the backlash comes into spec. Never mind just saw the last post time for a rebuild and set it up correctly.

That carrier has been hammering on those shims for quite awhile.
I'm sure you can see what needs to be done here. (New bearings and shims)

Set this one aside and get to cutting on the other one since it's tight! Save this one for the rainy cold days. That's just me........
You'll be more knowledgeable on the other side of this. That's how I've learned a lot of stuff, lol.

The carrier should be fine because the bearings are pressed onto the carrier. I would just order new bearings and a shim kit. But my question is what’s the gears look like? The ring and pinion maybe toast because of that slop/play.

To me it looks fine they dont have any noticable wear. But I dont really know what I'm looking at tbh. Its most definitely the bearings tho I compared the two carriers side by side and this one has alot more slop in it. The other carrier once the race is on as barely any movement this one you can wiggle the race around a quarter inch in any direction. I got the cage and bearings off I'm gonna order me a puller and get the bottom part of the bearing off and order new bearings.

I'd have the same problem with that one I tried it the carrier with the messed up bearings is the only limited slip carrier I have the other one is open the open one is fine in both housing and the limited is loose in both of them. I dont want to use the open carrier so I'm gonna replace the bearings and see what happens

May as well replace the pinion bearings also. Show some good pics of the crown and pinion. They will be worn in that spot now and will whine like crazy when u put it back where it’s supposed to be. I think ur best to put the posi on to the other crown and new bearings into the other housing. Kim

Hows that even move with the pinion installed? Is there that much play with the backlash set at .007ish?

If you want to set up a pinion a little easier. The pinion currently has a crush sleeve. What you can do is buy the crush-less sleeve and shims, then measure the current crush sleeve. With the available shims and new sleeve you will have the pinion set to what it was originally. But I’m guessing it needs a full rebuild anyway. Whatever is easiest for ya I guess.

I got one side off I will get some pics of the pinion and ring

Ring and pinion they look fine to me I dont see any obvious wear correct me if I'm wrong

So I can put the gears off the other housing on the posi carrier?

Got the second one off it was alot easier now that I know what I'm doing lol it took some trail and error on the first side
Now i gotta order a bearing kit and hope I can get them back on lol

Yes, but u will be using the other housing as the 1 u started with is obviously worn. Kim
I dont understand how the housing is worn if the other carrier fit in it fine without any play and it did. Its just an open carrier and I dont want to use it.

If all the wear happened on the shim and bearings then the housing is fine...in theory. Now if you had a situation as the shim was actually got caught spinning then maybe I could see the housing getting messed up, the carrier rides in between the bearings and shims. Check the housing rear good see any wear marks.

Yea I did the wear was on the inside of the shim where it meets the bearings I'm assuming the bearings was rubbing the shim where it had so much slop in it. I'm ordering some new bearings and a shim kit and I'm gonna go ahead and replace the axle bearings and seals while I'm at it. The pinion bearings seem fine so I'm leaving it be. I watched some videos on setting the back lash I got to get a magnet dial Indicator and I'm sending it! Lol
