Anybody have any ideas what these grooves are from in pic 2? Is it a way of removing weight for balancing? Any and all input appreciated.

Its def not a forged crank

I'm trying to decide to what extent I want to go on this engine, and we all know were that leads. Stay safe!!

Holes drilled in the counterweights were used for the "rough" factory balancing. I've seen them som some and not others. I would bet that those "grooves" are likely just marks from the forging /machining process.

pic 1 shows a block cap cast 1 12 1971, and a crank with a , more pics would help, casting number ?83588? - not forged

This^^^^^ It’s tooling marks after they faced off the counter weight.

cast crank. not forged steel. get some light pistons and internally balance the assembly

Good eye on the cast crank. But THAT early? Did they have a cast date? Dated bearings, VIN on the block or any other clues? It is almost 50 years old, but...?????

it is a 71 block, definitely not a 71 crank. cast 340 crank 1st year was 72, casting number can be looked up, and look for a raised cast date on crank
