Some years back I used to judge high school science fairs. One of the other judges was a Toxicologist from Bayer. Way smart guy. We would come across projects about how pesticides killed fish in the rivers or had a hazard of some sort. These would always irritate him a little bit. When I asked him why, he gave me an insight. He said that the these projects didn’t really give the whole picture. He agreed that they were factual and that the chemicals we use do have unintended effects and were likely harmful in some way. He then asked a question: can you imagine the country with an unsafe food supply? I had never thought of it that way. Doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try to do better. Just means those at the top have more things to consider than dead fish.

My point in this story is that just about everything at a country wide level is a compromise. We trade some of this for some of that to achieve a greater good. I hope and pray that we have leaders wise enough to make those decisions for us.
