440 Starter Opinion

I bought a mini-starter last year from NAPA & it came with a lifetime warranty.

The mini starters work good and fit well. I used one from O'reilly or something and it was fine. I believe it was from a 97 Dakota.

NAPA warranty says it doesn't cover wear. if you read all. 1 year warranty. Only 100% on some of the parts on the starter.

Try and get warranty from Napa. Many years ago they went to 90 days instead of lifetime. At least here in Canada. I had a track bar for my 2001,ram diesel 4x4. It had lifetime warranty. When they warrantied it they told me the new 1 only had 90 days. They also told me that the 1 I wanted warranty on was only 90 days also. I showed them the bill where it said lifetime warranty. They told me Napa doesn’t warranty any thing lifetime anymore. Kim

Stay away from the ones that have adjustable solenoids. They tend to move consistently and finally arc to the header. Gulling it don't work either. I got a mp 1 and its a great fit. My .02c

That is the same starter I've had in my bracket car for 11 years with 0 problems. I've since put one in my 2500 2000 RAM & my 2005 Caravan. I've had no problems with them either.

Those early 90s type starts are dead easy to rebuild and they all seem to last a really long time. I literally buy the cheapest one I can on eBay and short of one's "nose cone" braking off in the trans when I was removing it for a motor swap haven't had an issue starting regardless of the situation.

You like the power stop better than AC delco? I am ready to buy one too. Thanks

My 500/440 Stroker has a cooked starter.I was looking at three different ones on RA. Has anyone used the Power Select brand? You'll see all three I am eyeing on RHS says Part in Cart.

Do you have an old school starter/alternator shop in town? If so you might swing by and pick up something from them. If it is an old school place with a guy with gray hair behind the counter he might have some rebuilt ones that will last forever. We have a place like that around here and the guy rebuilds alternators and starters like they are swiss watches. He also doesn't charge a ton. I also give him my old cores rather than throw them away since he takes them apart and uses what he can.

I bought a 40 dollar eBay special ram mini starter for my 440 and I will never use an old gear reduction starter again. best 40 bucks I ever spent.

Not sure about your place but the places by me want MORE for a rebuild plus core than a new one without a core by A LOT. Like it was $120 plus core 4 or 5 years ago but I went on eBay and bought a “new” starter for $40 shipped

The Power stop has a sticker on the starter made in China on it. If I knew that I may have swayed to the GM Starter. But where is that made ? Mexico?

I will let you know where it's made when I receive it. I went with the AC delco one.

Nice. Now we can evaluate two of them. I'm hoping to get to mine this coming week as I finally got My Dad's garage cleared out. I feel like a kid saying that. I'm going to be 62 this month and my Dad's 92 ! lol God love him. He still mows his lawn.

A standard starter for a mid 90's Dodge truck will work just fine..I bought a high dollar Powermaster starter to put on my 440 in my Demon with TTI's and the bottom wire on the starter touched a header tube..The starter was real close to the header tube..I pulled it off then went to O'Reillys and bought a new starter (not a remanufactured one) for a mid 90's Dodge truck..It was a bit smaller than the Powermaster and fit better with a decent size gap between the starter and the header tube..A word of advice..When you purchase a starter have them test it on their machine in the part store to see if it works..Better to find out before hand as we all know how much of a ***** it is to change in a big block A body...

I've got one that was on my Durango. I had one that was good from a '99 part's Durango. Then the one that was in my 2000 failed so I used the one that I had for my Barracuda. I may take it apart one of these days to see what failed if they are easy to rebuild.

Interesting. For me I just want one that does a good job and will last as it's a PITA changing.

I would consider buying one locally. If it ever goes bad, it will be much easier to deal with in person and will take way less time to get your replacement. Plus, your're supporting your local community instead of possibly sending your money to another country.
