Engine builders, cylinder head gurus, know-it-alls, and knuckleheads. What valve seals do you prefer and why? I need to order a set and was wondering what are the pros and cons of each, if any. Looks like my W2s require 3/8”x.530”.

i run vitons on everything i can now-a-days. I feel they do a better job at oil control whereas teflon can be too good at stopping the oil. I used to remove the spring on the exhaust side.

Thanks guys. So far what I’ve read says Viton is the newer material but haven’t really heard many differences. I did read something about the Teflon seals being harder and stopping too much oil. I’m gonna go with the Viton seals myself and see what happens. Easy enough to change them if they suck.

I like the viton better. But if something is new that comes with Teflon, I'll use them. If I have to change them I'll upgrade. And yes - no spring on the exhaust side with them.

So you pick the spring off the seal before or after it’s installed? Why? To allow a little more oil into the guide?

Off before, and yes it allows a little more oil down the valve stem that way. Remember the exhaust side has very little "low pressure" time in it's life. So unlike the intake side that has a vacuum on it [pulling oil in, the exhaust gets hotter, and has little such suction. Taking out that little spring helps.

I used to take the spring off the teflon when used on exhaust. With viton i run them as they are. I do a lot of cylinder head work in Ct. I retrofit them into any application i can, antique, racing and street stuff. I usually leave about .200 clearace between bottom of retainer and top of guide. That leaves about .050 clearance for the seal.

Viton here! Just did a cam swap nit long ago. Valve seals that were in motor were there a good 14 to 15 years. Guess what were still soft ans supple! But stil went ahead and put new ones in.
