Anti theft devices

Get a ring doorbell and mount it under the dash. Pain in the butt, but you could connect it to the wifi at the hotel and if anyone gets in or
near you'll be notified and you can tell them where the club on the steering wheel will be placed if they don't leave.

If you want a cheap LoJack, buy a cheap burner phone. Buy a month of service, Install an app called "Find My Kid", fully charge the phone and put the phone in the trunk or under the back seat etc.

The app let's you activate the ringer, I think you can even talk on the phone without someone having to answer ( IIRC, so don't quote me on that)

Well that sucks, we were planning to stay there and spend an extra day running up to SantaFe. Maybe we'll stay down in Los Lunas just south of there, now sure if that's any better.

Stay in Moriarty, about 45 minutes east of Albuquerque, on Rte 66, it's a cool little town in its own right. Easy drive from there up to Santa Fe, and (obviously) into Alburquerque.

I never locked any of my converts, never left anything of value in them, roof got slashed once outside a bar I frequented, but nothing else.
I used to own a Subaru with a manual that the shifter handle had broken off. I used a 1/2" deep socket on a 6 inch extension as a substitute, just put it in my pocket when I parked the car, could leave the keys in it, nobody would have been able to take it.

There are a lot of great ideas here, and I don’t want to take away from that. But these aren’t Honda Civics, and when they get stolen it’s not usually a “smash and grab” operation. Guys that steal classics usually don’t jump in and hot wire them. They put them on dollies and haul them off on roll backs. They target hotels around the major shows.

So while a discreet kill switch isn’t a terrible idea, you should be realistic about how much protection that really gives you. Staying away from big hotels around show time would be much better protection.

I would recommend a professionally installed alarm. I owned a prerunner VW Thing and it kept the “curious” from even touching my car.

Hidden kill switch. Also I made a coil wire with cut and shrink wrapped ends under the boots and replaced coil wire with Dummy wire.

I always had the old school chapman locks. Locks the hood and kills the ignition.

The Ring doorbell is a great idea! Never thought of that. Most cars are stolen with tow trucks and flatbeds

Car cover with a good cable along the bottom looped in and out of the wheels, cinch it in tight. That or run chains through the wheels and around the axle.

  • You all have some good ideas! For teenage fun I used to take my buddies VW backup light power lead off the positive coil lug and put it on the negative side. Every time he put it in reverse, the engine died.:wtf:
  • I like the idea of the fake coil wire and grounding the coil with a switch. Same teenage years, we would joy ride each others cars with a jumper from the + side of the battery to the coil and tap the starter with anything metal. Off to the races!
  • Also had a buddy with a switch on his electric fuel pump. Once he had to search a radius the equivalent of his carb float bowl to find his rig. He found it though.
  • Does anyone cable lock the hood down or is it possible?

I did that trip in a 65 Dart last summer. I went from Santa Monica and drove back to MN. Ha! small world.

I had no issues with anybody and the Dart. I did use a club when I parked every night. I think most people are respectful and the Dart got ALOT of attention on the route.
I stayed at the Blue Swallow when I was in NM. Absolutely fantastic place! You will have a ton of fun on your trip!

Can't the club be removed by cutting through the steering wheel with a hacksaw blade?

Put a FORD sticker on it.

rottweiler on one end of garage , bigmouthed german shepard on the other end , window to survey the whole deal , metal locked garage , big bore of ur choice ----------

How is the trip planning going?
I haven't looked at this post since last year, wow. Trips looking good, we plan on heading out mid September. Getting a few bugs worked out in car. Bought new tires so had to get new wheels also :) Excited and ready to go, been planning this for 18 months!

Use one of these for any flatbed thefts or any theft for that matter.

Yup, every thing of value will be brought in or in trunk. I'll check out that switch, thanks
Don't put valuables into the trunk at the motel or a restaurant. People are watching. We had a group of sales people rent a car and go to a restaurant in San Francisco. They went to the restaurant and took their bags and loaded them into the trunk while there. When they got out, someone had popped the trunk and taken their bags. Five new laptops stolen along with personal items & money in those bags.
