Just bought a 1978 440 for my dart, its in a van right now,it had not been run in years,I just got it running, and iTunes great, one noisy lifter and a strange low howling sound comming from the front of engine? Could this be a bad water pump,or did I buy a bad motor....

I don't know. I caint hear it.

Not run in years? Without hearing it, my first guess would be a bad/noisy alternator, dry p.s. pump or even a idler pulley for the a/c... lots of possibilities.

If it makes the noise right off after starting it I’d pull the drive belts off of the accessories and fire it up and see if it’s gone. Don’t run it too long as water pump won’t be turning.

That's what I'm gonna do tomorrow morning,it was a good deal,440,727,9.25 with a locker, though I could sell the rear axle and keep the motor and trans for my dart, its running on propane, and was well maintained at one time,

I would also see if I could hook a mechanical oil pressure gauge up to it. If it's got a bad main bearing, sometimes it will show up as a significant pressure loss when the engine comes up to temperature.

You need to isolate where the noise is coming from. It's probably a bad bearing in the alternator, water pump, or power steering pump. With a bad bearing, most of the time but not all of the time it starts to sound like a flock of woodpeckers on the inside of the engine.

SOUNDS to me like a dried up water pump bearing

You ought to go thru the engine anyways anytime you don't wanna put a time bomb in your dart, then you'll be full of hate & that isn't a good thing for one's heart.
Gasket set, aluminum water pump & housing anyways, your 440 will give you a hug for that. You'll wanna know that your piston rings aren't stuck, it's only a couple hours, blood sweat & tears (just kidding bout the tears)

I'm all in with MOPARMAGA on this one. Anytime an engine with unknown history has been sitting, it's always good to tear it down to at least a short block and clean the accumulated carbon/gunk/sludge/and other "surprises" you may find inside of it. You won't regret going ahead and putting an improved rear main seal retainer setup in it and new gaskets, seals, timing set, and whatever else you may find you need.
