Harbor Freight jack stands recalled

Pretty sure mine are all older than that anyway, but definitely good info to have.

I'd venture to say we risk our lives with all of them.
So now what double up on stands? This is what our addiction to cheap Chinese junk gets us. I'm buying a new paint gun and it will not be made in China. One company is Japanese another German with a good reputation for quality. Cost is 3 times but whats it cost when the Chinese junk screws up a paint job. Materials dwarf the cost of a gun.

I built these.

I’m looking at buying a paint gun also, which one are you considering?

I guess what I'm saying is just because you have made in USA jack stands does not mean your are not putting yourself in danger. BTW Devilibiss finishline is a nice econo paint gun. I've been having success with 3m's accuspray too. Of course my Satas are the ****.

Mine too !
I always build up and block the frame and under the wheels too , out here alone , dont need a catastrophy !

I just exchanged mine yesterday. Absent an earthquake, who places their jackstands in a position where they would shift the load once placed? I'm not sure I've ever had that happen in 4 decades.

I always give my cars & trucks a good nudge before getting under it just to be sure, and most times leave the floor jack under the car just in case.

What company in the US makes this style of jack stand in 2020?
This same jack stand design has been on the market for decades by a lot of different manufacturers. I wonder if the tolerances of the lock mechanism in the Harbor Freight versions are sloppy or something? If not - then it is a risk with the overall design which could be an issue with all of them out there.

I have a few of those.
When I saw how little engagement the pawl went into the teeth on jackstand, I quit using them and bought some good stands made in USA. Somewhat pricey but it's me under the car and I'm worth it.
Bought them from NAPA.
I am going to recycle them for the weight. (Chinese ones).

I bought a pair of 6 ton that style from NAPA and there was so little engagement I took them back and bought the ones pictured in above post.

Something we did in the old days (low budget, wrenching in a gravel driveway) was stack a pair of spare tires w/wheel under the car. In a worst case if the car drops those are going to stay under there and hold the car off the ground, off you.

The worst is cinder blocks - aka concrete blocks shaped like 8. Those can crush. Never use them. The only thing worse than that would be going under hte car with only a bumper jack - but Imma stop before I scare myself.

A good low budget safety block is a big chunk of solid log, as wide as it is tall. Working under cars - especially big heavy ones like Cadillacs - I never feel safe and those give a degree of positive backup.

Gotta go to the shop now and pick up my jack stands to return, I have six of them, four are under a car! Guess Ill replace them two at a time.

I just took my two 3 tons back & they gave me a gift cart for them. Didn’t buy any more since I have a bunch of others already.

Have to wait till I get my car off the 6 ton ones to return them. Have a secondary support there already anyway.

Have used those for years without issue, but better to be safe.

But wait, there's more!

"...I'm disappointed and embarrassed because we've identified a welding defect in a small number of the Pittsburgh 3 ton steel jack stands (SKU 56373) that replaced the recalled jack stands. We're now adding these jack stands to our recall. Unfortunately, this defect wasn't discovered during the initial recall investigation. If you own these jack stands or any of the jack stands in our original recall, whether or not you have had an issue with them, please stop using them immediately and bring them back to your local Harbor Freight Store for a full cash refund or store credit ..."

At least they are up front about it.
