However, this is a somewhat related, true story:

When I was studying Auto Technology at Hartnell College in Salinas, California circa 1973-75, our class took a field trip to nearby San Jose, California to tour an engine rebuilder facility. The employee that was doing the hands-on final assembly was a deaf/mute and it was mentioned that his handicap probably came him an edge when checking fit and tolerances because he had a very well developed tactile sense.
