AMC used alot of Moparts, and Ford and Chevy. Maybe they adopted the Mopar lifter OD (as it was the best) and the lifter manufacturers just determined that one style of .904 lifter will be made with the universal AMC pushrod oiler seats as they do jack (are almost check-valve capped by the solid ball on a non-oiler pushrod) on a solid pushrod motor and do everything on an AMC/Magnum motor. Just economics. Im thinking that motor would be rattling like a can of spray paint with way too short pushrods and they would possibly unseat from the lifter at high rpm valve float. I did a mains and rod bearing change on my back under a car over the course of a week, all kinds of stuff floating around down there but I used 2 cans of brake cleaner on everything before I put it back together and 5 years later when I pulled the caps, there wasn't a scratch on that crank. You dont have to work in a clean room to put a motor together, just make sure everything is clean right before you install it. Cover it with a hefty bag on the stand if you have to take a break.

It was rattling and sounding like a bag of crap. Are you dead? I used to respect your posts Pishta but you are way out of your league. The ******* lifters weren't the problem. J.Rob

I ordered a set of small block lifters from advance auto or somewhere and when they arrived, the boxes were actually labeled as AMC lifters. 304 , 360 ,401 or something like that. I took one out and compared it to one that I pulled out of a low mile LA 360 , (I assumed they were original) and they were identical in height. I threw the set in and it never missed a beat.

Huh? who said Lifters? Out of my league....who could hear anything in that video? Blame it on the 7 anti-tank missiles I fired off my right shoulder....This is a web photo...but its actually ME (!) firing in this photo, 1/1 Oct '88, Camp Pendleton.

I used a AMC type solid lifter with solid end pushrods in my 408 with no issues in 5 years. The AMC lifter isn't the problem here, it's an excuse.

The very first engine I rebuilt by myself was a 383 for my 71 Road Runner in 1981. I disassembled it and took it to the machine shop my Dad had used for years with instructions to hot tank everything, do a valve job, new cam bearings, hone the cylinders, polish and mic the crank and order the correct bearings, rings and a gasket set. I didn't own or know how to use a mic at the time and didn't plastic gauge it because the machine shop was supposed to have ordered all the right parts. Anyway I assembled and installed the engine, it started right up and sounded good until it warmed up. It was knocking in the front, back and both sides. After pulling the engine and disassembling it I discovered it was .010" on the rods and .020" on the mains, all the bearings were standard. The machine shop took care of it, polished and miced another crank provided the correct bearings and another gasket set.

I learned a valuable lesson on my first engine, measure everything and don't assume anything.

Hell, is anybody close enough to me? I'll whoop you up a mean 318. I have access to one of the best head porters in the country.......although he's sworn off cast iron, I think I could sweet talk him into a pair, OR we could do it ourselves and both learn something. I won't charge you a dime and you can even schedule to come over and watch/help/learn to build it. All I'll ask is gas money to and from machine shop and maybe you buy the beer. Beer drinkin will only commence when we're done "for the day". LOL

I believe you've made your point several times now. However, as much as you seem to think you are the "expert" here on this engine, attacking other members and name calling aren't going to earn YOU any "respect" either, and only shows your immaturity and arrogance. You have an "opinion", so do others, learn to live with it.

Well said and "I agree". There is a point of diminishing returns on "this type thing" and I think it's been met a long time ago.

Ok well at least we know why you're deaf! Thankyou for your service---that engine sounded absolutely awful. I could hear from the first crank that engine was screwed--But good 'ole Nick pressed on. J.Rob

I am an expert on THIS and I wouldn't call my post an attack and please show me where I called someone a name. I don't name call unless I'm 100% positive I'm on solid ground. I am also both immature and arrogant so nothing new under the sun there. What I'm learning in this political climate is that if you're a conservative you're not allowed to have an opinion. J.Rob

p.s. Yes I've edited this and after further reflection, arrogance is often confused with confidence and yes I'm VERY confident in this case.

Please do and of course YouTube it. Who is this head porter you speak of? J.Rob

I completely agree. I'm not knockin anything he does or contributes here. It's gettin old though beatin the dead horse. We all know what happened "now".

It's called confident incompetence

I read the lifter thing multiple times as well.

I read another member echoing it like he was a self proclaimed expert too.

Ever since hydraulic roller lifters came out and the whole leaking at the top of the lifter bore **** due to this band or that counter sink or that base circle too big...when a oiling problem arises the same ones show up saying it the lifter bores.
You would think a mopar is a piece of ******* **** if you dont know better after drivel these "experts" barf out.

I also love everyone passion for jumping on the next latest and greatest bullshit... hokas pokas burn holes in your pockets parts...
Yeah I always run 700 dollar race lifters in my "classic cruiser" 360 for the 1 of 5 days a month I cam drive it...

It's just not what experts say it is... they are selling you!! Try this for ME!

Scare tactic high pressure salesmen.. living vicariously through your wallet!!

Everyone said my needle rockers would go to bits and send needle bearings through my engine..... never happened!!!
Everyone said my low cost morel roller lifters were going to do a death squeal if I daily drove with them...never happened!!!
They also said I had too much pressure... nope. Before that ...it was too little on my solid flat. Everyone is always trying to talk down to next guy, especially the builders.
There is always one saying you're doing wrong... when really you're just not doing it their way or with their preferred parts.

Kiss method.
The clowns behind this 318 think they are too good to **** up... they fucked up because of that attitude right there!

Nick is okay, but still ...the kind of shop owner who also feeds you appetizers of bullshit till he figures it out...and tapes it together just to get it out the door that day.
So the crank is cherry even though all that trash went through.. hmmm... is that what up? I quit watching... my arms are tingling for all the grinding lately..

You said "are you dead?" and then you said how you ..."used to have respect for him... " ...then you kinda back track in another reply and tell him.. "thanks for your service.."

You're not an expert. You're another builder with your own experiences..whi atm acts like he knows it all. If I don't read you bashing on veteran members and claiming to be an expert...I won't lose anymore respect for you. I've unnecessarily spoke up on your thread when Duhwane started turning it into a porter head racing advertisement...no gratitude, just keep liking and agreeing with the same suck asses.... right.
Btw thanks for what you do share of value, Jessy.
