if neither of the block will work with just a hone and rings he has some decisions to make

With his engines and what he stated he wanted to do, it is a gamble, period, So is a junk yard engine of any make model and year bar none. While modern ones are a good to great bet, it is still money spent that may not be needed or a route he wants to take. He wants to try and just do a re ring job. While this may or may not work, this remains to be seen. I’d assume any engine I get needs to get a bore enlarged.
