here is a picture of my steering column were shaft comes out the bottom of tube. does this look correct or not? is there suppose to be something at bottom of tube like a bushing or bearing? or is it suppose to have all that clearance? I will sure be glad when I run out of questions, because I will be done with this project! I am spending more time on this site than I am working on my car!

Looks normal.
You mean that I do not have to take it apart and fix something before I put it in, things are looking better! thanks for the info! after the steering column on to heater box and then I will be done with interior except for carpet, seats and sill plates Bill

Well, nothing goes there.

I have no way to know if anything may be wrong with your column.

where did you get the colored seal for joint? and do they come in different colors?

Many of the steering coupler kits include that seal in red. I've only seen red or black...

My 1970 dart has a white plastic bushing at the bottom where yours seems to be missing

Is yours column shift or floor shift? We know some have and some don't have lower bushing or bearing but never really figured out why/whats the difference.

The white bushing is typically between the outer jacket and shift tube (visible in the OP's pic. Retainer clip is also visible). The shift tube rotates within the bushing. There may not be anything between the shift tube and steering shaft at the bottom and that could be considered 'normal'.

It was a column shift originally, which makes some sense. I still have the unit and it has a small bearing also.
