Yeah, that’s bad. Someone was dicking around in the mud. Not a big deal actually. But, would need cleaned off before a rebuild. Otherwise, wouldn’t have caused a problem installed on the car. Actually, may have slown down a shift shaft seal or dipstick tube seal leak if anything.
I think I would have pressure washed first.
I agree, I get them spotless BEFORE I tear them down.
Looks like it came from the "General lee" after a chase where the tires squeal in the dirt.

that's nothing. In about '73, I bought a junkyard core a727a trans for a 340 swap into my 67 cuda. It had been seriously fried. The "fluid" was dark brown syrup. The smell was horrible, I can almost still smell it. I had to wash everything in lacquer thinner, and it still took a lot of elbow grease to clean all those internal parts. I'll never forget that. Incidentally, I still have that trans, it's in another '67 cuda.

I watched that video when I was rebuilding my 904 and I thought the same thing. Why the heck didn't they pressure wash it first! Why drag all that dirt onto the work table.
I was going to say the Playboy private airliner back in the day... probably really dirty!!!
