I've got one of the old-style halogen 3xD cell Maglites in each of our vehicles. Have had them for years. Maybe not as bright as some of the LEDs, but rock solid dependable- unlike most of the newer Chineseum ones, as you have found out. I would imagine Maglite's new ones would be similarly built.
