Heat crossover ????

Sunday I need to block the heat crossover in an intake manifold. I can’t do it with a gasket (I could do it with a gasket, but I’d have to machine the intake to fit with thicker gaskets and I don’t want to do that) so I’ve read (IIRC) that some have stuffed the crossover with aluminum foil as tight as you can and it worked.

Any one done it and had it work? I’m also going to test a CoolCarb spacer and that’s why I need to block it off.

Never heard of aluminum foil but I just blocked one off with thin stainless shim stock under the gaskets.

I just bought the Mopar performance intake pan gasket!! It just doesn’t have the hole for the crossover !! But the gasket was the same thickness as the one with the hole! So I’m not sure I understand about a thick gasket and having to machine the intake ???? And yes before I bought the gasket I used the foil ! Seem to work fine !! Now mind you this 20 years ago when I did all of this !!

That's the one I got. Intake valley pan with the holes blocked off. Problem solved.
 
How far the mighty have fallen! LOL at the beginning of the year your building an R-block, today stuffing an intake manifold with tinfoil... Bahahaha...

Sorry even I gotta admit that was funny. ......and yet here I am whoopin up a big block to go in a 64. Who'da thunk it?
 
I don't think YR is talking big block and metal valley pan gaskets.

Last i hered it was a R Block(Race small block.)

I think the key with alu foil is getting it tight enough that no air can escape thru it.

with open headers i don't see it pushing thru.......with an exhaust system...maybe
 
I should have mentioned it’s a small block. I wish the owner would have used paper gaskets but he didn’t. So I’m kinda married to the steel shim gaskets. Otherwise I have to mill the intake to fit and I don’t want to reinvent the wheel to put on a heat shield.
 
how about this, cut the opening for the crossover a little bigger on the gasket and then cut a matching steel piece to fit / heck the crossover hole is probably oversized to start with
 
I have on BB and SB. But it takes a lot of foil and you have to drive it in with a punch, or will erode away.
Finally, I did something more permanent.
I lined the port with foil and poured a melted piston in the crossover hole. Plucked out the foil and blended it into the bowl. Flowed better too ;)
Nobody laughed at me after that..

You know you can't use a steel shim gasket with aluminum intake, It will always leak.
At some point sooner than later you will have a major mess on your hands.

I knew I had a copy somewhere of the 6 pack intake gasket bulletin.

I have heard but never tried it, pot (i.e. fill) the crossover with 100% Silicone. Again, not sure of the results.

Could get them TIG'd closed?
 
I would use a shim of stainless. It has always worked for me and never fails.

At some point sooner than later you will have a major mess on your hands.

I knew I had a copy somewhere of the 6 pack intake gasket bulletin.

I’ve never used anything but the steel shim intake gasket on my B/RB motors !! All my buddies motors I built for them never used anything but steel shim intake gasket ! Not one leak in 30 years ! Not one. ! All of them have aftermarket aluminum intakes on them to this day !! No leaks as of yet !!

I just blocked off an old cracked (on both sides) CH4B with shims cut from a stainless outlet cover. A little too thick for the steel shim VP gasket so I recessed them into the intake.

LOL...you’re kidding me right? I haven’t seen a metal coffee can in 30 years or something!!! I don’t have one to cut up!

Good idea though.

Yeah, the guy who owns it bought the shim gaskets and put them on. Like I said, I’d have to cut the intake if I switch to paper gaskets, and I don’t want to do that.

And, it’s been working since 2015. And now that I typed that it will screw me hard!.

LOL...forgot to mention I usually REMOVE intake manifolds with heat crossovers in them, and if I, stuck with it, I use a paper gasket with the steel shim to block it off.

Trying to get this done without machine work if at all possible.

May have to start looking for a coffee can.
