How do I identify the correct oil pan for my '65 Formula S and '65 Signet convertible? I notice some oil pans have factory 3 digit numbers on the sump. Do all factory Mopar oil sumps have a number like that? I have a couple of "394" oil pans here in storage. I know from experience the steering link bangs into some oil pans at full turns on the 1965 models. What we need to answer the question once and for all is to find someone with both a "394" pan and a factory original '65 273 oil pan for direct comparison. Thank you.

P.S. krazycuda's "how to" article does not answer my question:

I don't have 394 pan, have 65 273 pan. Can take pics if that would help.

Try to get the same angle as in post #1 and we can compare! (The surface rust actually helps determine where the dents and divots are in the photos)

Did the early pans have stamped numbers? I don't think mine did. My book doesn't list any numbers until 67.

The #394 is a 69-69 small block pan. All A,B, and C bodies.

The question now is this: is the 394 a copy of the '65 pan with an added number embossed on the bottom for identification OR is it re-designed and different than the '65 oil pan?

The oil pans from 64 - 69 had the six nipple end rubber seals... I'm not sure if they are all the same for all the years, or if the early ones are different (64 - 66)...

If I were you, I would find an oil pan from a 64 - 66 273, that should fit and have proper scallops for the steering linkage...

Looks pretty close. Mine has that dent in the side. I don;t remember what for though.

Use the thick early brick mounts and you can get away with a stock chrome pan with a small ding if any. I had a 340 and a 360 chrome pan clear with the brick mounts. But a Mr Gasket 360 chrome pan would not clear a M72 -HV oil pump.....? Other one did without issue.

I’ve got a loose oil pan from a 65 263 Barracuda. I don’t recall it having any numbers. I will dig it out for some pics

I don't see any obvious differences between the "394" and the unmarked 273 oil pan. I guess the clearance notches for the steering link are not the same right and left, one side being more severe because the motor sits offset toward the passenger side as factory installed. Both "notches" look about the same to me.
