Hello All,
I am sure this has been discussed but I am having a hell of a time finding the answer. I have a 65 Barracuda 904 transmission behind my slant six in my 1964 Dart. I want to swap to a mid 70's (I think) 360. Will this transmission work? If so what do I need to make it work and is it an optimal transmission for the 360? Is it just a new bell housing? If not what do I need to find for the swap? Eventually I want to go to 408 stoker. Thank you in advance for your help

No... It won't work. You will need a small block 904 transmission. For best get a 727 transmission for the 360. It is a lot stronger.

904 fit that old body better....as 727 were not offered .....you will need to bang the tranny tunnel to get a 727 in....

and 904 can handle anything a 360 can give it..

Mopar automatic transmissions are dedicated to an engine family- slant 6s, smallblocks, B/RB engines need their own style trans. There is no removeable/interchangeable bellhousing. A 904 will work fine behind a 360, but you need to find a smallblock 904. If you want to keep your pushbutton shift, you will need a '65 ('64?) smallblock 904. Also be aware that the 904 convertor register grew in size in '68 (as well as input shaft spline changes), so if you use a pre-68 trans behind a 360 you will need a crank register adapter bushing in order to run the earlier convertor.

Ok. But I need a small block 904? /6 904 wont work?
That's correct, you need a small block 904 just like Professor Fate said. If you look up a /6 904 transmission you will see it has major differences than the small block 904.

Is there a manual transmission option for this? I have an 833 4 speed OD but it is for a B/E body.

B/E body 4 speed is to long for the A body, the tail shaft & housing is too long for the A body.

The B/E 4-speeds have the same body but a different tail - it's longer and the shifter mount pad is in a different spot. There are folks who have adapted a B/E 4-speed to an A body but it would be lots simpler to find the correct transmission.
