70 up timing marks cast in cover drivers side
~67-69 timing marks cast in cover passenger side.
~66 back no timing marks

Timing mark on 69 And earlier are not cast into the cover, it is a bolt on steel tab.

The water pump and radiator will dictate which you need

There is a two or three year cover that had timing marks cast in cover on passenger side. Think it was 67-69 but not sure on the start year.

I got one too, from a 68. Also have this one with a casting date stamped on front
Anyone one know how to decode this old "star" date stamp?

Don’t know about marine, but I think when 318s started in 68 the timing cover with the cast marks also started. I think the 273s used the bolt on marker but I am not sure. Not all that common since it was only 2-3 years. Maybe others on the site know more

Year is in center = 63
Each sun rays is a month. 12:00 would be Dec (IIRC) 1:00 would be Jan
Each of the dots is a week.

So straight up would be all weeks in December. One dot to right would be week 1 in Jan, 2 dots 2nd week, 3 dots 3rd week, line at 1:00 would be all weeks in January

I might not have it 100% correct but you get the jist of it.

2946797 here...didnt know it was a one year deal either. 69 barely visible in star under paint.

65-66 bolt on timing tube or arrow on right . 67 takes a bolt on timing tab with lines on the right. 68-69 molded in on the right. 70 on up molded in on the left.

68-69 molded in on the right. 70 on up molded in on the left.

Correct. My 68 318 has the cast-in timing marks on the PS. 1970 is when they made the switch to the aluminum water pump. The timing marks moved to the DS at that time.

I'm guessing fourth week of October or first week of November, 1963.

Each segment is a month and a pin punch for each week, I just don't know if you start or finish the month with no punch. I would lean towards the October guess.
That is how most of the castings my company gets are done, if they go that detailed. Usually just a month stamp on low volume stuff.

okay here is what i found based on all of the info above(thank you all that responded). all 3 have timing marks on drivers side. 2 are part number 3769966 and circle date shows 77 and 79. these numbers are upside down. the 3rd one is 2981698 and circle has 70 in it and all numbers are right side up. so thanks to all that help me to figure out this deal.
