Stephens Performance does NOT guarantee their used parts. The reason I bought my speedometer through Stephens Performance is because they “guarantee” that their used parts. I called Stephens Performance to buy a speedo for my 1967 Barracuda.

What I received was a 1968 or 1969 speedo. 1968 and up speedos take a different cable so I had to spend a extra $50 for a new cable that fits. I install the speedo and it didn’t work. I called Stephens and they said I must have a bad speedo cable. I ordered a second cable based on what Stephens said. I installed the second cable and it didn’t work either. I called Stephens again and they said I am installing it incorrectly. Then I pay a garage for them to tell me my speedometer doesn’t work. I called Stephens and I was told they only “guarantee” parts work before they are shipped. I received the speedometer and it stayed in the box till it was installed so I know it wasn’t mishandled.

If it wasn't the right one I wouldn't have kept it. Hook up the cable and run it with a drill. It might work and you have other issues.

I would not expect a 50 year old electro-mechanical device to not have issues unless it was professionally gone through.
I could sell you the working speedo out of my 68 Barracuda and guaranteed that it was functional when I removed it, but not guaranteed that it was still functional after shipping and re installation.
To get a classic car speedometer rebuilt
so it is reliable, I use Deluxe Speedometer in Denver CO. Reasonable prices, good work and my experience has been, they meet the quoted turn around time.

Any thing I've seen of the owner on TV, he looks bloated....and arrogant.
The guarantee was obviously a gimmick.
If it was me I would have checked the cable(very easy) before taking that clowns advice that it's broken lol.
I have a couple speedometers if you still need one.

The guarantee is no gimmick. Ted hisself told me a long time ago when I asked about that guarantee, and I quote: "We guarantee all of our parts to be used" unquote. That's it.

And unless the odometer was setting on
00000.0 it did indeed work at one point in time.

Well bloated old Teddy should have told the OP that instead of suggesting that the new cable was bad and that the speedometer was in perfect working condition.:realcrazy:

I agree 100%. I won't buy from Ted. Period. There's no doubt he "has" the stuff, but he's not gettin my business. He's not in business for little guys like us anyway. He's there for some of those guys over on the B body site if you get my drift.

That not a hard part to find here on FABO used.

Maybe if it was a 150 mph 67 speedo. Still they pop up.

A 120 mph would be like under $50.

What does it cost now to have an instrument shop repair a non working one without any cosmetic restoration?

It's always interesting that when your speedo doesn't work and you replace it with another and it doesn't work either. I replace a speedo in my 66 trying to gt rid of a bouncing needle. It was different but still not fixed. I cleaned and lubed the cable to no avail. I new cable from Napa took care of the problem.

You have to understand their position... how many times have guys returned parts that weren't what was shipped... was damaged while waiting for the part to be installed or returned because they ordered the wrong part. People lie about this stuff everyday. So you have to see Stephens side of the story... and when you are dealing with 50 year old parts nothing is guaranteed.

That's too easy for a seller to address. Pictures, grease pencil marks, whatever. Easy to overcome with simple and quick documentation.

Sounds like the buyer (OP) was purposefully mislead into believing the guarantee covers more than it actually does.

like about everything else prices are all over the map, Deluxe Speedometer / Denver CO has re built two speedometers for me, both times: fair pricing, good turn around time and both speedo have been trouble free.

note: I rebuild my stuff from the ground up so the car is like new when it is done,I I have them re set the odometers to zero, Deluxe will do that,,so all the miles shown are mine.

That`s basically what the OP quoted also. Some people gloss over that and think guaranteed.

Well, I'll defend Ted a little bit. He is selling fifty year old plus parts. That said, if someone sells "anything" stating that it's "good" and "works" they should do right by it.

Yep I thought my speedometer was a broken cable issue, nope it was a gear issue in the transmission.

How much was it? Not hard to ship a speedo to CO.

That's right. And that gets a couple things done. First, he gets his original speedometer repaired. Second, he supports someone we NEED in the hobby to keep being there to provided a very needed service. Lastly, he ain't gotta deal with Ted.

I had this work done about three years ago, means I would need to dig out the receipt, and it really depends upon what your particular unit needs, does it just need cleaning, new magnets,,,,,
To get pricing it would be easiest and most accurate for you to just give them a call.

Send wrong part, new cable must be bad, must have been installed incorrectly, are you still calling us about this?

Wait, we only guarantee it worked when it was sent, that should put an end to this problem, and any future business.

Shady talk.
Start with no guarantee on used parts, that's acceptable.

Diagnostic services over the phone is laughable, especially when it's never their part, unless you touched it.

Call them back and ask if they guarantee to send the correct part?

Man I hate your going thru all that crap. That's some bullcrap for sure.

I sold a rare Volvo carb to a guy a few years ago. Paid with PayPal. He took all the innards out of it then disputed the sale saying I misled him about the carb. He sent it back and I had to refund his $$$.

Lots of crappy buyers out there...
