Hi all....going to start doing basic body panel repair and replacing. For the average home garage, do I really need a 200-250CFT bottle for 75/25 mix? Opinions?? Thanks.

Interestingly enough it doesn’t cost that much more to fill a 200 than it does to fill a 40.

I have a 300 (I think) strapped to the wall and hooked up to my welder with an air hose. Kind of bought it by accident. It’s so big it would crush my harbor freight cart.

I personally have an 80cf bottle for my mig setup and a 125cf for the tig. I see no reason to have a 250cf bottle for home use unless you live really far from a refill facility or you plan on doing alot of welding in a short amount of time. I would recommend turning the bottle off when not using it as to not waste any from small leaks.

Agreed, you don’t need a large tank. I got mine really cheap so I bought it. I had a 20 first, too small. Just depends on how much you use it. At 20 cu feet per hour, a 20 cubic foot bottle is about an hour of welding. Estimate you time from there. Larger bottles cost more, but are a lot cheaper to fill per cubic foot.

60-80cf bottle is good for a home welder. As a welder by trade I have multiple T-300 in my shop for 75/25 and straight Arogon.
The 60-80 is manageable by most and large enough to not refill every day. They typically are able to be a “customer owned cylinder.”
In other words - no lease is required. Just swap them out.

My 75/25 is a 122. I use my welder a lot, manageable size bottle and i think i paid 178 fir my last fill. Here in canada.
I still think its highway robbery, but i cant mig weld without it.
The rental is also quite expensive imho.

I have 2 bottles, a smaller one for the tig i rarely use
And just checked my visa statement,$40 for rental of the 2 bottles per month. Actually its calculated per day as rental every month is different.

Another factor is being able to actually buy that size bottle. In MD most places won’t sell larger than 80cfh, they’ll only lease them. PraxAir does sell 125 bottles and that’s what I have for tig with an 80 bottle for mig.

Buy any bottle you want. We bought the smaller size. They upgrade for free so they sell more consumables. That is where they make their money on consumables. I go to Torco supply or MG welding also Airgas welding store. Never rent a tank that is just stupid. If they say rent tell them you'll go elsewhere. You'll see how fast they sell you one.

I have an 80 in my garage, it last me a while. I usually have 1-2 project cars a year. However, most of my welding is done with mig, I use the torch to cut and heat/bend things.

I lent my mig to my buddy. It had a big bottle of gold. He had it quite awhile. Came back with a small bottle. He said it didn’t cost anything to exchange it. He said they didn’t have a big bottle and he really wouldn’t need that size anyways. Ofcourse this was 2 months b4 he brought it back. Now I screwed and pissed. They want $400.00 for a big bottle. I told them I want mine back. I told my buddy that if I don’t get a big bottle back that he has to buy 1 for me. Kim

Just realized the question was about the argon mix for a mig welder... not ACETYLENE. I have the 80cf on my mig, wouldn't mind having a larger tank.

I had a 20 that came with my Hobart 140.

Second time I filled it the counter guy said it would be $5 to upgrade and $5.44 more to fill the upgrade tank which turned out to be a 60.
