i have a 65 cuda 273 4speed, from what little i know of the car its all stock, my dad left it when he died, iv had it for about 2 years now.. i'm not a mechanic but i am mechanically inclined, i do all my own work on my vehicles and if i don't know how then i explore & figure it out, which is what brought me here.. so..... i'm driving down the road last week am going from 3rd to 4th, apply pressure to my clutch & bam , it slams to the floor to the point where i can't even see the pedal, now i notice a cable hanging from the bottom of my car on driver side? is this my clutch cable ? did it snap & that's what caused my clutch to go to the floor. a friend told me my car is too old & should not have a cable, it should have a Z bar and rods. i'm so confused because i have a brand new z bar in the trunk of the car, but i seem to have all of a sudden just noticed this cable.. my clutch will come back if i pull it up but as soon as i touch the pedal it slams back down. do i have a z bar & clutch cable. idk what i have and where to start??

That is the speedo cable, clutch is operated by a torque shaft AKA Z bar and rods, alsong with a threaded adjuster. Jack up the car and see whats going on underneath.

have to check that out when i get off work in the morning.....suppose thats also going to be the reason my speedometer dont work, im sure it shouldnt be hanging like that.. thanks for the advice

Hopefully new Z bar in trunk is there for a reason. When that happened to me it was the throwout bearing not centered to the 3 fingers on my pressure plate. I Hope you just have a linkage problem.

Yes, there should be a little spring clip that holds the adjuster rod in place.

those use a retainer spring from z bar to release folk . to keep that adjustment tight of that rod there . looks like the wire was holding it in place , not a good idea .

AGREED................... my dad paid 17k for this car about 5 years ago, bought it from GATEWAY classic cars i think it is called, and let me tell you there inspection process is down right shameful...... and that rod should there be any slack in it or should it be firm?

my clutch has stuck since i got the car , i could push it in and after i would have to grab it with my toes and get it to release from the floor then it would spring back up , could this be the cause , i always thought that it was the spring under the dash..... like i said im not a mechanic , i just know a little here and there basically what iv taught myself over the years and been taught from a few people

Do you have a factory service manual? You can go here and download it for free.

Scroll down to 1965 Plymouth service manual and there you go. It will show you in detail everything regarding the clutch linkage. Don't worry, it's very rudimentary and very simple to fix.

Thanx man I sure do appreciate it, are you guys on this Mopar forum I've been more helpful in the past two nights then a lot of people have in the past year especially because I'm the only Mopar fan that I know of besides one and he's got a newer model SRT Chrysler. My first Mopar was a 73 satellite I was fooled into believing that I was actually buying a real roadrunner but I fell in love after that and I still want another satellite.. and my dream car has long been the 69 Roadrunner thanks everybody for all your help maybe one day I'll finally get this barracuda into a local car show

My 64 Barracuda used to do that, but I can't remember what it was. Just start looking at all the pieces from the pedal to the adjuster rod that goes through he arm going into the bell housing. Compare them to the Brewers online catalog. You can also take it all apart and clean and grease everything. Check your parts for any cracks or anything bent. Then it would be a good time to replace the bushings and clips. You might want to remove the bottom cover and check what clutch is in there.

that helps alot thank you , looks like a pretty common clip just have to find the right one , possibly any other old mopar with a standard?or any car with standard or it has to be mopar
Ya, any old Mopar with a stick should have one. Possibly other brands but I don't know. If you find a used one grab the spring that holds tension while your're getting. If you don't find one try Ebay. NEW Mopar Clutch Linkage Spring Clip | eBay

Don't know how to do that, although I'm sure it's pretty good advice. But when you say grease everything with what? Like we use grease at work on the wreckers and rollbacks to lube the beds and the wheel lifts it's thick nasty **** you wanna use gloves when you put it on throw em away when your done. Or do you mean like white silicone or wd 40

You want an 1" of free play with no resistance at all. In your bellhousing there is a throwout bearing that spins when you push on the clutch to disengage it. The free play keeps the bearing from spinning when you don't press the pedal. so it will not wear out.

Use the nasty thick grease that keeps moisture out, stays where you put it, and lubricates stuff. Use it on the plastic bearings in the Z bar tube and all the sliding and contact points. I even grease the threads on the adjuster. The only place I don't use it is on the rubber pad between the adjuster and arm for the throw out bearing.
