Bronze is/was the gear for mechanical roller cams but what is used for hydraulic? Is the gear pressed on to use a regular gear? If not, what is the gear to use that does not to be inspected from time to time? Thanks! Bob
(this is the gear that is on the oil pump driveshaft)

I had a custom comp roller that I purchased through IMM Engines in California for my SB. It uses the same oil pump drive gear as stock.

Depends on the camshaft material. If it is a true billet steel then it will require a bronze intermediate shaft gear. If it is an Austentic (cast) core then a stock or cast intermediate gear will work. It is more than likely a Austentic core. J.Rob

It’s pretty easy to see the difference between cam core materials. Crane cams and Hughes engines have the melonized (sp?) gear that can be used with ether.

On CCams web site their solid rollers extreme series cams they state billet steel I call belony as RAMM stated , It’s a Austentic core I use their XR -274R and use the Mopar performance distributor drive shaft with harden tip with the standard gear as I purchased the melodised gear from Hughes thinking I required it. That was a waste of $ 90.00 dollars plus shipping .

would it matter what the core material is as long as the gear that is pressed on is the same as a factory non-roller hyd. cam?

Use a polymer gear. One and done. Works for anything. Lasts a LONG time.

There WAS one company that made them......doing a search I cannot find them now.

Call Mike at B3 Racing. He can order what ever you want and explain why. One source, compatible parts. Expand your boundries, it's the cam, lifters, push rods, rocker arms, oil pump gear, rocker shaft geometry, all of it. If it's not happy, your not going to be happy.

As others have stated... It all depends on the cam core material. Typically you will get a Billett/steel core...or an iron core...
With billet/steel ...you have 2 options, bronze or melonized/coated steel.
Iron core uses a regular stock style gear. Easy.
Billet/steel..Crane sell a coated/melonized gear. They are not to be used with a used cam , they are a one off..must be a new core/machined and can only be used on the cam they're mated to. Like piston rings, you dont reuse them and you dont switch holes with them after break in.

Bronze to some extent ends up in the oil and magnets don't grab it.
Fwiw the last hyd roller from lunati I bought was billet/steel. It will look smooth between the lobes...even blueish.
I recommend the melonized gear/"crane coated steel gear" as its labeled on the package. I run one.

Good luck.
