So many engines...

Just watched engine masters crank out 432hp and 473 lb-ft out of a stock 78 low compression 440 with a 268 comp cam and 240cc trickflow cnc heads. Yeah my vote is 440. So easy to get power just freshen up the bottom end and done.
My buddies 440 dynoed at 496 horse, 500 lb/ft with a +.030 440 and ported iron heads, and a fairly mild Comp cam. 0-100 in not too many seconds.

O.K., here's my take . A 318 is nice but it's biggest drawback is it's bore size , otherwise it is cool . 440 is a really tight fit and servicing is tough . Plus yours has a heavy cast crank . A 383 is a good pick and if built to mild Magnum specs . My pick is 340/360 , 904 , 3.55 .

I mean the engine they were testing had so much blow by and it was less than 7.4.1 compression! I guarantee if you bumped up the compression and put a bigger cam you'd see a real beast but with the low compression it'd make a go anywhere and run on regular gas cruiser that can pull hard.

440 is tight but not as bad as everyone makes it out to be, i have an RB in my duster and find it easier to work on than the small block it replaced.

Especially a RB. The block is so tall the heads are well above the steering gear and linkages. Distributor up front as well. LOL

Thank you guys for all your input, I guess I’m torn between a N/A 440 or a blown 318 or N/A (I’ve always liked it cause it seems like an underdog to most)

I’d really like to beat on this car often and was wondering which one you guys think would be able to take the abuse better?

Definitely the 440! They can take a ton of abuse and then some. I've put on 5,000 miles so far this year and raced it all weekend ran my best time so far 12.92 and was planning on road tripping in September then go racing again when the weather cools hoping for a mid 12 pass.

I would make a low deck 451 using 383 w 440 crank with aluminum heads intake radiator manual steering all to lighten up the front end. Suspension brake upgrades, make a REAL street car not some over the top BS blower crap that can't be driven
further than the local cruise night.

383 magnum can do 450 hp easy and run great. had one build like that in my 69 charger and drove it everywhere. Go for it.

I guess big block it is! Thanks for everyone’s input!

I think I’m gonna just rebuild the 383 magnum as I already have a kit and use it to cruise around while I gather up parts for my 440. I have a pair of 906 heads and the 452s that came on it. Would you guys use either of those ported or just go straight to aluminum heads?
