"How close" are the early and late A body tailpipes to being the same buying them pre-bent?

IDK the answer to that. FWIW I have a set of NORS tailpipes sitting in the rafters for a 69 340 Dart. I bought them at my local NAPA at least 30 years ago. The plan was to fit them on a 70 Dart (never got to that stage). Hope to find out on the 65 sedan delivery conversion

I think they are either the same or so close they interchange, but danged if I can remember.

Our Pypes tailpipes are tested on 1967-1974 A-bodies and fit pretty much interchangeably except some of the A-bodies were a little longer in back. Adding a pair of tips makes up the difference.

I am specifically wondering about the 63-66 cars. Mine is a 64.

Wish you were closer! We'd love to get an early car in here to see if our tailpipes fit the early cars.
If you want to e-mail me pics of the undercarriage of the tailpipe area of the car, if it looks encouraging, we'd be interested in sending you a set of tailpipes to try. chrisc@pypesexhaust.com

Hell yeah. I have it on jack stands right this minute fixing the exhaust.

You have mail. I think they will fit, but I'm not certain. I'm particularly interested in the 2.5" size.

Funny, I just ordered pipes from Accurate exhaust. I am removing my 2 1/2 header system and going with manifolds and stock sized out the back with tips. Pricey but the headers always scraped and I want a true stock type exhaust. The first setup was from torque tech, i saw they went out of business not too long ago. makes me wish I had invested in pipe benders. I think you just set the machine up and go like Midas used to be. there is a setup for each car ,you set the machine up and it bends the piece. Do think though that, you could make the pipes fit, with a few cuts etc. I have fitted more than a few exhaust setups to cars. It require patience and measure twice, cut once etc.

I'm sure the new machines are all computerized. Back when I was running exhaust, we used a card catalog system with cards that had measurements, degrees to spin the pipe in the machine as well as degrees of bend. Very simple system and worked very well. I'm sure there are still some out there.

If you are looking for any performance increases, The key to the bending machines whether automated or not is that they are 'mandrel' design. These are VERY expensive machines and rarely found in a shop.

Here's a staggering fact: 2.5" Mandrel bent tailpipes flow 50% better than 3" compression bent pipes (which are found in 99% of exhaust shops).

So if you care about performance, you want mandrel bent pipes. You lose a little of the OEM look but you can gain 25 HP on even a stock motor. That's a very inexpensive way to gain performance.

Pypes and Torque Tech (and others) use mandrel bending. Accurate used compression bending machines. Good for originality and good quality but not nearly as efficient if performance is important.

Yeah, they keep the diameter consistent. I've never had the pleasure of running a mandrel machine, just the old die and shoe machine, but I was shown a few tricks to help keep the diameter more consistent than just jumping in and bending away......of course still in no way comes close to a mandrel machine. They are nice.

I sent the pictures of the muffler location. I left the car in the air just in case you want more.

I bought a 2.5" Pypes exhaust at a local mopar swap, I modified the collector pieces, and bolted it on, I still need to install the rear hangers, but as you can see the rear pipes are long, easy to cut back and put a body tips on.

To answer your question. Left tailpipe is the same between early and late applications. 1967 and earlier with the transverse fuel tank strap requires a different
tailpipe to clear the J-volt on the right hand side. The right tailpipe is approximately 3-1/2” lower in this location over the later tailpipes. A modified J-bolt could give the clearance for later tailpipes.
