My friend gave me an echo dot and a fire tv stick today as a gift.

It took a couple hours to set up and the stuff works really good but it's freaky.

You can ask it some really off the wall questions and it knows all the answers.
It can turn the lights on and off, open the garage door, turn on the coffee maker.

It's really nice but it's freakish......

Anyone on here use this kind of thing and know more things it can do?

I just recently got a new TV because I bought a soundbar that's supposed to be good for deaf folks. The old TV wouldn't work with it. Dammit, it sure is nice, too. I can hear every single thing down to the quietest whisper......but this soundbar can do all that stuff you describe. It even has Alexa in it.......somewhere. It can get Netflix, Hulu, Roku and Disney and has "all that stuff" regarding lights and whatnot too.......but I'll never figure all that out. I just use it for the badass sound it produces. I can hear the TV again. I can even "see it" as a wireless connection on my laptop.

Rani, nope nope nope. Don't want anyone listening to me more than they do now through my phone!!!
Way back two years ago my wife and I were sitting in a doctor's office waiting room. I was talking to her about something, can't remember what. Then I started scrolling through my Facebook and up pops an advertisement for EXACTLY what I was talking about.

@RustyRatRod what is the name of the sound bar you got? I need one like that!! I bought a sound bar a year ago but it's almost as hard to understand as the TV.

My wife asked me "Were you looking up oil filters?" I said why, did a bunch show up on your facebook feed? "Yes........" It knows......because its always listening. If your good with that, have a ball! The remote lights and stuff needs adapters that the things plug into or a unified home control panel. I cant get my firestick to talk with my Echo....? Maybe one is too old.

It is the Yamaha YAS-109. It has a "clear voice" feature on it that accentuates the voice frequencies. I really like it. Its volume is not earth shattering, but it doesn't have to be. Its bass response is great, too. You have to have optical or HDMI (ARC) on your TV for it to work. I had to save up a couple weeks to get a more modern TV. LOL

By the way...why can hear EVERY word of EVERY commercial just fine, but can barely make out the words in a movie

Simple. Because they use they type technology in commercials this sound bar uses to make voices clear. I've always wondered that and now I know!

We have the echo and love it. You can carry on a conversation with it and forget it's not human. It definitely can creep you out though. Start asking any kind of questions and see where it takes you. We think it's fun and useful too!

I would get in trouble with Alexa because I would say "show me your boobs". lol

Around here , the commercials are always at a louder volume , some really bad !

Commercials have been at a higher volume than the regular tv....

Back in the days of VCR's they had a 'gadget' to edit commercials while you were recording and you didn't have to do it manually... It monitored the sound on the recording and when it detected the volume go up, it would pause the recording until the sound went down to the 'regular' sound...

It worked most of the time, but if there was a loud part in a movie, sometimes it would pause it during that part where the volume increased...

Not to mention that the advertisors want you to hear their ads so they make them louder than the rest of the broadcast so you hear it better... Subliminal advertising....

There are canned "random" answers for "human test" and "provocative" questions.

Pretty sure you already have to have remote control lights and thermostat (with "interop") for it to control those.

Even of you don't have one of those.....

...and you have bundled TV and internet, you get some interesting TV commercials and ads across different computers.

My wife was shopping for bulk cat food, and the next day we got the same three pet food commercials on TV, no matter what channel we were watching.

She's been shopping for "underwire-less" brassiere's and now my FxBO ads are almost all lingerie and swimwear, all the time!

I put a timer on my wife’s Alexa so it can’t record all of our conversations. Those recordings can be subpoenaed and used against you later. Just saying for a friend.

I'm by myself the vast majority of the time, so that would be hilarious if it recorded my conversations with myself.

I just don't trust the microphone stuff. I have fire TV and have noticed stuff coming up that we were talking about. I disabled the mic in the remote and it stopped. Kind of funny right?

Rani the fire tv is kind of cool, If you are a amazon prime member it unlocks a whole bunch of movies.
