Ok, I’ve got a 1970 dart I’ve been working on forever. Originally a slanty, putting 340, four speed into it. Motor is in place with the rest of drive train and the pulley I have for the water pump isn’t deep enough to line up with the alternator. There is only one belt, manual steering. Is there someone here who can educate me regarding what it should be.? Frustrating as I am close and would hope to get n the road before it gets cold. Thanks in advance for any information you can provide.

I think there are long nose water pumps and short nose water pumps, and different pulleys with different offsets. But if the alternator brackets, the water pump, and the pulley all belong to the same motor, I don't know how that happened. What's the total depth of the pulley you have now? How much deeper should it be? Maybe someone has one that is deeper.

I’m assembling a bastard installation, engine was procured without anything else. looks like the pulley should be around 2-1/2” deep but would need to measure. The one I have is about 1-1/2” which isn’t deep enough.

It could also be the alternator brackets contributing to the "offset". They are different depending on the year.
Lots of stuff has to match for it all to line up.
Pics would help.

new brackets are on order but this shows what I’m looking at right now. Any guidance is appreciated.

You just need the non a/c pulley. Its pretty deep. Hopefully you have the correct alt brackets.

You have any pictures oh what you are messing with?

o.k. , here's the issue . you can't use A/C and non-A/C pulleys on the same motor and you can't A/C brackets on a non-A/C motor . Everything must start with the crank pulley , this must be correct . then go to the water pump pulley . It must match both in diameter and in offset . Once that is aligned , next comes the alternator pulley . duel pulley alternators are for A/C cars and misalign with non-A/C water and crank pulleys . Remember 1/8" is no good . I've seen lots of cobbled up pulley drives in last 40 years and a lot end up in a bad way . You can mock up what you need and get on the forum for parts but start with the correct crank pulley first .

here is what you need listed below. not saying you need to buy new but follow the links and take note of the measurements and find them used if ya can.

WP pulley you need. BPE Water Pump Pulley - Bouchillon Performance Engineering

crank pulley you need. BPE Single-Groove Crankshaft Pulley - Bouchillon Performance Engineering

alt bracket you need. BPE A Engine Black Finish Alternator Mounting Bracket Kit - Bouchillon Performance Engineering

It's also best to run a single groove alternator pulley with those other pulleys and brackets...

Thanks, that explains a lot as I have been gathering parts for years without noting these issues.

Gotta make sure wp matches rad also.
Need front on pics, only thing I can tell so far is a 70 + water pump.....

Cmon, man, post better pics, this ain't show and tell:poke:[

i purchased the water pump new recently when I rebuilt the motor. The radiator was also purchased recently and matches the water pump. I have the 3 groove pulley on the crank which came on the motor, out of a 70 challenger with power steering and a/c. I think I need to order the pulleys suggested by a body joe and move on. Sorry about the poor pics but there isn’t much to see there as the only pulley in place is the crank. I did purchase a new alternator with single groove pulley.
Thanks for the assist, I will keep on until the next issue arises.

yea that isn't gonna work. don't necessarily need to buy new (except maybe the alt bracket and spacers) because they usually pop up here for sale at times.. in the description of the pulleys on the pages i posted it will give you the measurements of what you are looking for... but yea you do need a matched set.

Ok, I hooked up with SGbarracuda for a water pump pulley and ordered a new crank pulley from the source a body joe identified. New brackets due to arrive Monday. Thanks to all on this great site for your assistance, much appreciated.

There is a cast Water Pump and an aluminum one. I think the cast is 69,and they went aluminum in 70. there are different pulleys I think between the two as in a 69 pulley may not work on a 70 aluminum WP and vice versa. I ran into this on my 70, I had put a cast iron WP on, pulleys wouldn't line up,so I had to pull the cast iron WP and install an aluminum one.

The brackets I purchased for this has the triangular bracket offset tirwards the back of the car. My other 340 which has similar bracket offsets towards the front of the car. Can anyone here confirm which is correct?

I received the pulley from sgbarracuda Today and things are starting to line up nicely thanks to everyone for your assistance it is appreciated!
