Intro to a port job

Jack Vines on speed-talk.com has some good machine shop equipment for sale at good prices.

I was dealing on a Peterson seat and guide machine but I just couldn't pull the trigger right now with some major surgery coming up in six weeks.

14 years ago when I rebuilt my 360, many of the machine shops I called wanted to do more work than I had in mind. Rods for one they wanted to resize. This motor was fine when taken apart all highway miles no internal problems. This 360 originally came out of a pampered 1975 chrysler cordoba. Only reason owner stopped driving this car was front end wore out! So machine shop also wanted to line bore block which also was not needed. Heads were junk so I found some nice 340 x heads. My dad has a straight edge tool to check heads from snap on they checked fine. Also machine shop wanted to suface again not needed.

A novel concept, measuring stuff before you "fix" it... I've seen more stuff made worse or ruined by extra machining. 14 years and still running strong? How could that be, without all that needed special machining? ;-) That would be a topic for another thread. The only engines I kept were virgins. Not interested in someone else's "rebuilt" engine.

Once you mill a cast iron head, I have never seen them need to be milled again.

Only overheated stuff. The rest just gets a spin around on the big belt sander for a clean of the dark marks.

It showed up today.

Well I did a couple seats. It wont allow me to upload pictures. It keeps saying failed to upload. It also keeps logging me out, that's been frequent lately.. wtf is up with that?
I logged in to post. .. I have to re login to submit it.

Okay, 1st try of kwikway 318 #302 head int/exh. Need some stones for 60* and a new diamond tip for the dresser. It was munched and ate **** after making a 15 for the exh top cut. So I did a 45/30 Intake and kept the factory 60, then did a 45/tiny 30/15 top left the factory 60. Neat. The gauge was beat, is, but I fixed the indicator straight and lubed it...and it's a smooth operator. So it's looking good for what I got...with a cell phone camera taking the pics and cleaned off with dirty rag. Lol The last pic is exh, about 5 angles 45,30,15 using the existing 60 and 0 top

I messed and messed with my grinder, couldn't make it concentric, usually .003 to 005 thow out of round. Even bought a new pilot that fit much better, but couldn't make it true
Found an old timer that showed me how to float the grinder. He took one of my ports that i had way off, and seconds had it true. Put my dial on it and it was true.
I rarely can get it that true, but most of the time can get it with in 1/2 of a thou to 1. ( .0005-.001)

Before you do any 65 or grater bottom cuts make sure you have a proper bounce spring in it. or you will shatter a lot of stones. the spring under the stone is a simple thing, haven't shatter a stone sense.

You don't need to push on it.
I watched 5 vids before trying, seeing all kinds of ways, wrong and right, wrong still working but never checked with a gauge..
It was zero'd at the 20, what's it out .001ish?
I 'heard' up to .005 is factory tolerance.
I realize I didn't even zero it on 0..just 20 because I was watching how far it moved more than if it was set to zero. It has a spring inside the holder/arbor and not in the port around the pilot. Some dont use a spring at all. Lol Still having fun . I need to get my fine stones in order for the seat cuts. I think I just sized up stones and angles I had and didnt pay attention to finish as much as feel on this practice run.

The diamond was all fuckerd up on the dresser, tip came off after 5 th dressing of a stone. So I'll waiting for one from Goodson and some more stones

You know, I have a Peterson seat and guide machine, and I do all the multi angle cuts, and chamber unshrouding with it, but I always finish the seat with a light stone cut. Works for me. Not a thing wrong with stones

WHEN I lived in the US 30 years ago i nade money running up to Canada to get real beer for the guys on campus .sorry but American beer just sucks
Well molson give the runs and moosehead tastes like horse piss, but in not gonna insult all our canadian friends by saying Canadian beer "just sucks..."
I will say your cousins at Kronenboug have a better grip on brewing beer.
There are so many beers nowadays, in most I dislike. iPa,no thanks. Coffee beer, ciders, all that flavored crap...you can have it.
Pilsner,lager , stout,cream ale, red ale, I'll take those.

Lucky guy.

I'm looking into one, and a rod hone, rod heater. Sunnen Ck 10.
Right price and I'm ready to pull it.

Yeah on the intake it was hitting the chamber pretty good and I didn't want to break the stone so I took my die grinder and knocked down to chamber a little bit where it's stuck out just so the stone would kiss it. I like being able to put a wide Top Cut and open it up

Now you can get a junk head and go Wild with some Crazy angles!!!
And one, that is just a test head,(junk head) you can mud it up and reshape to you harts content!!!
I wish my new house had more them 110v in the my little 2 car garage.

These checked out cracked, not into water ,but just cracked.
They may work with a bigger valve but they'll need seats because there's a crack between a couple

Nat! I was overseas once (vanuatu) and walked up to the bar and being an aussie I thought Fosters is advertised overseas all the time as the Australian beer, so I ordered one to give it a go. Well after a few sips I returned and asked for a Heinekin. I do not know anyone in australia that drinks fosters and we all agree it tastes **** but it has a big advertising overseas as " THE Australian Beer"'

I had to buy stuff one peice at a time, it takes a while to get fully equipped, and I'm not there yet

That is how I did it, and you will always need/want something else. Funny, I just got a seat grinder myself, have 2 DCM seat/ guide machines, but have been wanting a seat grinder for years. I sometimes get big diesel heads to do, and they can be a pain to mount on the machine.

Nah, just haves to be patent and wait until i get my garage built in the back yard.
The 1 car garage that came with the house has ONE OUTLET IN IT!:BangHead:
I have two 3 way splitters in it. Just so i can have a radio, Beer Fridges, meat freezer, battery pack charger for drill, and be able to us my saw to build a couple of shelf.

I'm wanting to get to know my new flow bench. BUT to many iron in the fire ahead of it.

what valve grinder did you have? This one is a kwik way NSG model from around 1968 when Cedar Rapids machinery became Kwik way ...and went on to make a similar driver with a smoother rounder shell and angled snout , losing the previous manufacturers look. I figured that out last night after doing some reading and finding the instruction manual
