The CEO of this company I work part time for called wondering how I'm doing (broken ribs). Then he says "we've made some staffing changes." Turns out they fired my super. He is in a similar situation as I, meaning, he's part time, and has some health issues. Now they are NOT overloaded with work and he was NOT particulary behind on anything, and they had NOT approached him about could he work more hours etc. They just fired him. They told him something about "they needed someone full time" (which is bullshit) And THAT may be a violation of the ADA. I believe this company officially has less than 50 employees, so the employee health act may not apply.

I might just tell them to "take this ******* job and shove it up your ***." Believe me, I just might. The thing is LOL I'm the ONLY guy there right now who knows ANYTHING about assembling either the main drive modules or the power seating modules.

my work is infamous for letting the only person who knows how to do something leave, and then going "oh crap". they may be getting a bit smarter though. there's very few of us that do my job, about 90% failure for new people, and about 1/2 of us can retire any time we want. they managed a pretty good raise a couple months ago but it's only going to buy them a year or so for the ones ready to leave.

They already hired a new one. Speaks volumes of the back room "planning." This is not the only issue with this joint.

I accidentally stumbled into the coffee-shop yesterday morning at coffee time. There were eight elderly long-ago retired locals in there. They called me over to announce that, collectively, I was the best garbage man this town ever had.
Let that stew for a few seconds.

Most management assumes they can hire and train anyone to do any job.

For the most part, that's how it does indeed work.

Unfortunately, even in the case of stellar talent, it seems like it takes a special manager to recognize it.
I've been fortunate enough to be in that situation on one and two half's occasions.
(3 jobs where 1 manager really recognized my potential, and 2 where I was recognized but not fully appreciated)

However, I've seen many cases of mediocre management thinking they have stellar talent, when really it's a snow job.
Those employees get treated as better than gold while the rest suffer.
Sometimes that's ***-kiss, and sometimes is just poor management.

if you're the only one who knows your job, you're close to (or past) retirement age and management is effing with you in some way or as is the case here, you feel like your "days are numbered" ~~ maybe it is time to say bahbye.. you set the terms, you don't owe them ****

Was let go from a job in Aug 2016. Was told I was too expensive.
Hired a kid to do my job.
They found out where I was at in Feb 2017 and informed me that the inventory was off by $30K. I chuckled and said it was off by $50K then.
I had the inventory packed $20K to the positive.
They paid me to come in on a Sunday and see what the issues was. It took me all of 20 mins to figure out what happened. If the new guy was going to keep doing what he was, there would be more loss.
I was asked to come back. No thanks, I got a nice gig now and wasn't giving it up.
I wouldn't just quit, let them fire you. Get the cheese from the government for awhile.

My brother worked for the county, before he retired. When he left, the county did away with his position. They then found they needed someone to do that job, but couldn't hire anyone, as the position was eliminated. My brother now works from home on a computer about 2,000 miles away, as a "consultant" at about 1/2 the hours, and 2/3 the pay scale (more per hour) then when he worked, "in house".

EDIT: plus his county pension :)

Not going to lie, I went back that day so I could gloat and get paid well for the trouble.
I was more than happy to point out that inexperience costs money, and they were getting everything they paid for.
They caught the $50K there was another $20K in the they weren't aware of that I brought up, and the rate the new kid was going it would be another $10K or more a month.
They made a deal with me that they didn't like after they realized I could do what I claimed I could.
I agreed to a salary of $250 a week + 10% of the gross sales. At the time, they were losing $1000 or more a month. They figured if I was able to get costs covered and maybe see a $5000 a month profit they had a great situation on their hands.
Turned out after the first two months, I was doing $10K in gross profit, by 5 months it was $35K within a year I was doing $100K+ a month and needed to hire on another employee and a second driver.
I was making way more than the GM was due to the pay plan.
He didn't like that.
They hired a kid from the outside with zero experience for a whole lot less.
That kid couldn't keep the in house stuff straight, let alone the outside sales I had generated.
They've since replaced that kid, but have yet to get the numbers back to what I was doing.
I find teaching P/T and doing historical/archival research far less stressful and a better gig.

The manager I worked for at O'Reilly was like that. Looks great on paper. Knows how to keep inventory. Knows how to do all the paperwork right....all that stuff. But he is the worst people manager I've ever seen, plus, he's dumb as a stump in the automotive world. His parents gave him some kinda Volvo with a sideways inline six. He's like "yeah it's gotta turbo and I'm gonna make it haul ***". I was like, ok cool. So few days later me and Evan (another employee) went to look at it. Evan's a young kid, but VERY sharp and up to date on EFI, turbos and newer stuff. So we get over there and walk up to it, he's got the hood up. We look at the engine and then at each other. Evan said "Billy, where's the turbo again?" He said "oh it's right there". He was pointing at the hose coming off the exhaust manifold going to the intake for hot air. And this is a guy who honestly has like 20 years experience in auto parts management.

Another story about him. I replaced the gas tank in my 75 Ford truck a while back. Went from 19 gallon to a 38 gallon. So, I thought "what better time to get it coated?" so I took it down to the local radiator shop and they coated it for me. Fast forward about a month later. I was having trouble with it just sporadically cuttin off. Finally, I had diagnosed everything else, and dropped the tank. You guessed it. The coating was letting loose. SO, I called Spectra and told them what happened. They guy told me all their tanks are already ceramic coated and nothing will stick to them. lol So I took the tank back and had the radiator shop boil it back clean. In between all this......Billy, the store manager looked at me one day and says "I know what it is. I bet it's the ECU." Now bear in mind my truck is a 1975 model. That's NINETEEN SEVENTY FIVE. Although it DOES have electronic ignition (GM style HEI) it sure AS HELL ain't got a ECU. I told him, "naw that's not it" He actually kinda bristled and said "I've been doing this almost 25 years, I bet that's what it is" I said that's kinda impossible when it doesn't have an ECU. His response?" "Well then how does it run?" I'm tellin yall, they are all over the place like him.

I'm glad I retired when I did, Jan 2018. I was approached the day before my last day & asked what it would take for me to stay until the end of the project I was working on. I told them that there was no way I would stay because no matter how much I did to keep the project on track that the powers that be were causing major problems as the days go on. I had been gone for 11 months & my former supervisor approached me & asked me to come back as a contact consultant for almost TWICE what I had been making at HALF of the hours I had been working. I looked at him, smiled & said "No thanks", I have a good gig going working in 3 different areas & working on my schedule. As of today, I'm able to work whatever hours I wish & do the things I wasn't able to do having a FULL TIME job.
 
That's why I don't plan to work one day past the day I have my 30 years in to our retirement system.
I will be 58 at that time.

However, much as Id like to, I can't retire early because the system dings you 5% per year for every year you are under 62.
That means if I retired today with 25 years in, I'd lose 9 years instead of 5.
If they paid me for 25 years, I'd lose $400 a month, and I'd probably do it.
By jacking me 9 years, Id lose over $1300 per month.
 
Sometimes companies get "smart" yeaaaaaa.... and get rid of all their older experienced people and replace them with smarter, younger people..... then the company is is easier to sell, because of their younger work force (smaller salaries and cheaper benefits) makes it look better to the buyer BEFORE all their sales and business goes to HELL!!! lol
