any special tools need for taking a 904 down to bands and clutches? Pump Puller or clutch press?

Two tailhousing bolts screwed into the pump, then a pair of channel locks can pop it out; or pry between the direct drum and sun gear shell. My first 904 I cut a 2X4 to fit down inside the drum to push down the direct spring retainer; one guy at each end; then some external snap ring pliers to remove it.

Take bolts out of pump and stand it up bellhousing. Tap on tailshaft with dead blow. Pump will fall out. If anally retentive regarding the pump falling out, put a couple longer bolts in the pump so it drops out to the bolt heads.

One friend of mine just picks the thing up and drops it lightly on the bellhousing.

I've never used a slide hammer or any special tools to get a pump out. The 727 rebuild video has the same approach.

Lots of ways to skin a cat.

You should try it sometime slide hammers a lot lighter than picking up one of those transmissions specially when you're working by yourself not everybody has big muscles

Spray some WD40 around the pump then pry between the lugs on the sun gear shell. Alternate down on the sides. Spray oil on the pump agian and knock it back in..repeat process until the pump can be withdrawn from the case...or until you break something...

Not gonna happen here... I'll do it the easy and lazy way.

You don't even have to lift it off the ground, tilt it up on edge and let inertia take over. You have to lift it to move it around unless you rebuild on the ground!

Can take up space between input shaft and ground with wood blocks as well.
