So I decided to take this little pitted up gem to work to glass bead at lunchtime and see how bad it is. It's pretty bad. I first thought to fill up the pitting with JB weld, epoxy prime the dang thing, and just paint it. But what color will work well. Semi flat black, dark grey, silver?

Or should I find a better one, make a silk purse out of this one with some JB weld and paint, or attempt to get this one rechromed. A lot of work will go into smoothing down the pot metal past the cleaned out pits to be able to chrome it. I am kind of a cheap *** when it comes to stuff like this that's hidden most times so I put up a poll.

This is keeping in mind that I also plan on putting a phone charging port in the lighter hole, and possibly the toggles for the 42RH where the ashtray goes, so it will be getting modified

Thanks for taking part on my poll.
Matt

Can you powder coat something like that? There is a "chrome" powder that is somewhat convincing. As long as the powder doesn't get too thick and inhibit the sliding of the ash tray door.

Mine is pitted way worse then that. I haven't decided what to do yet either.

Rechrome, get another, get new (I think it is reproduced)

I havent found any repops of this, yes Steve it's for my sons cuda. I'm working big projects, but do small fill in projects like this in between.

I wanted to assemble the front console top with him helping.

Anybody have dimensions of the black plastic slider. I have thin black textured lexan to make one, but no dimensions to work off of.

Interesting, I thought at one time B/E & A Parts had them.

So none is exposed unless slider is open? I would fill the pits sand and paint. Argent silver looks good in my opinion. Heres dash one I blasted and spray bombed. Your skills...ez ps.

I had the same deal on my ashtray. I've used JB to fill pits before and it works great. I cleaned up my ashtray and painted the innards with Rustoleum's Hammered Silver. I really like how it came out.

If you decide to go the chrome route, I used Rustoleum's chrome paint to do the inside of my tail light lenses. Again, I am pleased with how it came out.

I think theres some sort of filler that works with powder coating. Leanna the mistress of powdercoating would know. Since it's mostly hidden, and I am planning on modifying it, I am considering cheaper options.

I assume your working on a 67 or 68 with the silver painted top plates? If so, I would paint it the same silver that's on the console top plates. Rechroming will be WAY more then powder coat. I had a small antenna bezel rechromed in 2012. That small piece cost me $50.
