Speedmaster Aluminum Heads

-
Thank you everyone for you posts. Yes Mike, big block. Just kicking ideas around for both me and Dad...if prices are right and timing...

There's a thread on them somewhere, as mentioned. I bought a bare set for $502 shipped. Dwayne worked on them a bit (redoing the valve job, milling .055 for 74cc chambers, and Stage 1 porting) and now they flow:

Lift—— in/ex
.100—- 72.5/62.7
.200— 148.8/105.4
.300— 217.6/143.9
.400— 261.8/171.5
.500— 286.1/190.5
.550— 290.5/197.8
.600— 292.4/203.7
.650— 293.5/208.6
.700— 294.3/212.2

Should work nice with my .652 lift cam that is stifled by the mildly massaged iron heads on there now. Will be swapping them on this winter :)

Might as well post the ootb numbers too......

Why not

Flow ootb with Ede valves:

Lift——-in/ex
.100— 67.5/53.5
.200—137.2/101.2
.300—202.8/138.3
.400—241.2/160.3
.500—256.1/171.2
.550—262.5/174.4
.600—269.2/176.9
.650—269.2/178.1
.700—269.2/179.3

I had the CNC Speedmaster knockoffs. They need offset rockers .630. They are a beautiful head. My machinest was impressed. There is also a Performance World head out there. I seen the 1 set and they look nice also. Kim

I have run both heads. The Stealth needed more work out of the box, seats and chamber. The Speedmaster seemed to be finished better, just needed some blending. All said and done I have about $400 more into the Stealths. If your goal is 450-550 HP you cant go wrong with either. If you want more horsepower start with a better head. The 440 with Stealth heads and a Comp XE275HL dynoed at 502 HP. Heads had seats recut, milled .020 and lightly ported and polished.

The Stealth head with only the seats recut, valves back cut, and some bowl work, ends up in the 280/200@.600 range.
They’re generally in the high-250’s/low-260’s ootb.

After rework, they will easily support solidly over 500hp on the right combo.

out of the box, do the stealths outflow a stock 452 head by very much or just barely?

A stock 452 is usually in the 220’s.

Plus the typical untouched 452 chamber is 88-90cc, the stealths are 80-81...... and closed chamber.

Unless you can get machine shop work done pretty cheap, if you’re going to start with an original set of high mileage oe heads....... you’ll probably spend about the same $$ refurbishing the old heads as buying stealths.

I haven’t seen the RPM copy style head available from SM in a while.
The only BB head I’ve seen from them for over a year is the Victor style head.

Ive already got reworked 452 heads on my 440 dart. they are not ported at all though. i thought maybe if the stealths flowed a good bit more out of the box than the stock 452's that i may buy a set and have them checked and install them but if they dont flow much more without porting than its not worth doing it until later down the road when i can afford a head that will flow better out of the box.

Between the SM & Edelbrock heads, which would you rather start with on a street strip type of build?

check out promaxx as well i have an old set before they had the cnc program made for them

are you running their heads with all their hardware, valves, springs, retainers and locks?
haven't had any problems?

Promaxx just did a 15% off sale.

yeah i had them machine the heads to 75cc install stiffer springs for my solid roller cam. i did take them apart and check them out. im no expert but valve hights were all with in a few thousands. the valves have edelbrocl engraved on them, i did swap out retainers and locks cause i had some titanium ones.

If they were both reworked to the same degree, I’d expect them to make the same basic power.

If they were for myself..... I’d use the Ede heads........ helping to keep some other Americans employed.

I was at the engine shop today and the owner showed me a set of Chinese knock off heads that just came in on a fairly new build. The owner went with all cheap Chinese parts in the engine and it was trash after a few thousand miles. The valves were mushroomed on both ends and the valve guides were loose. The guy saved a few hundred bucks first time around and now he has to do another rebuild and buy new parts. Chinese parts are junk. Buyer beware.

China will supply what you are willing to pay for... if you want the absolute cheapest valves, don't be surprised when they're made out of melted-down coat hangers. It IS possible to get good stuff offshore, just not for 10 cents on the dollar.
When I had @PRH massage my (bare) Speedmasters, including redoing the crappy valve job, I paid for better valves to go with them. Already have good Comp springs, retainers and locks.

How would you feel about China castings with US quality valves and locks etc?
