Valve spring micrometer

Yea that's my main concern also with the 1.62 my springs will only be .026 from bind. I'm not comfortable with that.

Sounds to me like you need to choose different springs. How much difference does .026 and .076 have at 5500 RPM? I sure don't wanna find out.

Not much out there for 1.624 lol
Pop up Locks or cut the spring seats down.

The 901 is 1.650. That's pretty close. I would use offset retainers before I cut the head. JMO. I never like cutting the spring seats. On some heads, it's really thin in that area.

Like a slant?That's about .080-120 thick.
Some heads, like truck 318 heads, without longer valves or ...... you cant get a real spring in there. The passenger car heads seemed to have more room, then again a lot of machinists would just put the valve job down some.
Retainers are 150 bucks, but I know you meant what I said earlier with pop up locks.
But its really not a 'big wow' to cut .020 off the spring seat... that's how I know how thick the slants are

Yeah, it's unfortunate that the only way to know for sure is to hit water. lol

That's what I did. I had them cut the spring seat of a 69 slant head till it hit water.
We wanted to find .050 more installed height... 1996, we went with isky pop up retainers and ford 370 springs. Those same retainers, 55.00 then are 155.00 now.
I'd cut .020 and not worry about it. Cutter is same cost or less than pop up locks and retainers to match from comp.
The seat hold springs that exert 300-600 pounds. They are thick.

A sonic tester can answer this question non-destructively. J.Rob

Absolutely it can! I didn't think about that because it wasn't a cylinder. lol Thanks!

In '96... no shop in fresno ever mentioned a sonic tester. Back then i had a pile of slant cores and Art Sheddler had no problem cutting out of curiosity himself. No one was hotrodding 225's in town back then. There was only 1 hyper pack in town in an old 62 police cruiser valiant.. or at least it was made to be a cop car. I bought all my parts from the dealership on Blackstone ave..when they had catalogs full of stuff for them still. You could have bought a ported head for 1000.00, scrapers...the old but not very old days..I miss.

That's the springs I'm using. I have yet to find any offset keepers or retainers? Iv heard about them but cant find them for sale!

The other problem with the offset retainers is I need multiple different sizes. None of mine are the same height.

You're simply going to have to get them as close as possible. Split the difference. I forget, which way do you need to go?

Yeah.... he's using the factory multi-groove valves... you're not going to find a set of +.050 locks for that...
You can all day for single groove valves.

Is there a reason you cannot use single groove keepers on a multi groove valve? I don't see why not.

You seriously came up with nothing searching "Mopar offset valve locks"? Really?
Not for factory style valve's. They have the 10 degree locks with 1 and 2 grooves and all that crap but I'm not looking to buy new valves retainers and and keepers.

I need to raise the spring height so up. Here are my heights as is I need you get to a min of 1.64 as you you can see they are all over the place some are .10 some are .030 some are .040 some are dead on!

Do these heads have new seats installed? If so, the seat valve seat heights should have all be equalized when the VJ was cut.

Well, I know what I would do, regardless of what anyone says. lol

No he just cut the original seats as you can tell he didnt cut much. I think the heads where originally around 1.62 and the variances I'm seeing is the seats that was in bad shape and he had to cut more in those seats! I measured these heads before I ever took them to the machinist and iqad getting a really short height. And everyone in here told be it was because I measured them wrong and I wasn't using the correct tool so. I bought the correct tool and they are still to short! Haha. I think these heads are just made that way. Somewhere deep in my notes I have the original measurements I took with a snap gauge and calipers. Iirc I'm pretty sure it 1.62
