Hi all, ive got a shell 75 dart im working on and to be frank, im on a college budget and can't really afford some of the prices out there for steering columns. 1k for an ididit? no thanks cant do that. And i can't seem to find any used ones for sale whatsoever. Im curious if anyone knows how necessary it is to use the correct steering column. Can i go and get a steering column of from a junk yard of some beat up random car and make it work relatively easily? I'm not afraid to do some cutting and welding, and im not particular on getting era correct or body correct parts. I just want to be able to steer the thing the cheapest i can get while still being applicable. Thank you!

Welcome aboard.
First, yes you do not need $1,000 Ididit column.
2nd, You haven't been looking in the right places. This here is the right place. A couple questions. Do you have power steering or manual steering.? Do you have column shift or floor shift transmission? I may have a column for you if not me someone else on here probably does.

^^This. tell us what your plan is. And if I recall correctly, FMJ columns are a close fit, too...

So my current plan is to do a 408 stroker 360, 727 torqueflite or possible a manual (i can't remember the name of the one that's super strong and i was planning on getting), manual steering and lots of fiberglass for the parts i don't have. Like i said it currently is just a body, just a shell no parts other than that and the stock axle, which is getting swapped for an 8 3/4. Im going to do a rollcage to make up for the lost safety aspect of fiberglass ofc, and for rigidity when i save enough for a procharger. Restomod build, not looking to build era correct or anything, keep it light and simple

Cool at least you have a plan.
The only columns that I have for manual steering is for 3 on the tree shifter.

The only main reason i want manual steering over power is because i can get a new/reman box a lot cheaper, but if i can get all the powered components for a similar price and a column to go along with it i'd be just fine with that. Not too worried about the drag from one on the motor

Power steering boxes? Ya I have some.
My zip is 81506 but send me yours. I know the size and weight and have a FedEx account. I ship hundreds of packages every year.

If you'll install headers manual steering will fit better.
