Evening all,

Any support appreciated, we have the engine out on a stand - 78 360 from a van.

Attempted to change the rear main seal by removing the pan, oil pump and rear main cap. Then carefully tapping the rope seal out with the crank in place still, failed big time, it just crushed up, the other side moved a fraction. The rope seal is now half an inch down on the side we tapped and only moved a fraction on the other.

So,

1. Any tips on removing the rope seal, its on a stand in the garage, I wasn’t expecting it to be a fight.

2. If we have to ‘loosen’ the crank how would you recommend doing so? Undo all of the mains caps and lift it up 1/8th of an inch?

Thanks in advance,

Steve

There is a little tool called. The sneaky Pete. It’s like a corkscrew that u thread into the seal. It helps to turn the crank the same way as ur pulling the seal. I have use needle nose pliers. Or a wood screw. Kim

THIS/\ /\ /\.....they sell the sneaky pete at all automotive stores.

Us a long self tapping screw in to the exposed end of the rope seal, trying to avoid contact with crank surface, but don't worry about block side, grab the screw with pliers, and pull gently as someone turns the crank.
The rope will just follow the crank.
It hasn't been nec to loosen mains in my last few experiences.
Dress, and polish any nicks to crank,
Just push to install modern rubber seal.

Ok, big thanks all for the swift responses, I will let you know how we get on.

If we resort to number 2, having to loosen the crank, how would people recommend going about that? (Hopefully not needed!)

I wouldn't worry about loosening the crank until to try the sneaky pete while rotating crank at the same direction. If I have enough help I try to get someone to rotate the crank and also have someone tap on the other end of the seal to give it a boost as you pull on the other end with the sneaky pete!!

Thanks all,

What’s the correct name for the factory type seal?

We don’t have sneaky Pete’s in the UK! Fortunately a screw did the job. Many thanks for the support.

I snapped my stock oil dipstick tube (still got the dipstick). Does anyone sell a factory length tube? - 78’ 360

Cheers

Steve

Use a slightly larger screw or "lag" bolt to screw into the broken tube.
Tighten until the broken tube turns, then twist and turn and pull with vice-grips.
I actually have a slide hammer and lag bolt specifically for that purpose, so I can leave the alternator in place.
Tap new one in using a 7/16 open/close wrench against the"flare".
