I'm contemplating painting steel wheels for my 71 Swinger black rather than body color (GY8) and use the original dogdish caps. Post your pics to help my decision. I'm not crazy about the ralley wheels,

if you run 14" SBP you will understand.

I personally like the black steel wheel with caps look.... especially with red line tires.

I went with rustoleum Navajo white. Touches up super easy

Steve I was planning to go body color (GY8) steel wheels with the same red line dog dish caps too, but the 14" X 5 1/2" steel wheels do not clear the SSBC front discs!

So, I decided to buy a pair of used 15" X 7" WheelVintiques (sbp) Rallye wheels from Ken (72Dart6pack).

Fortunatley, Dick (3rdLM23P9) was kind enough to buy the steel wheels from me.

Dan, I've retained the 10" drums up front so clearance isn't an issue. I would like to use the BFG T/A 's I have on the car now, so I need to locate 2 SBP 5.5" wide.

Hello , did you say you picked up two orginal 7" wide steel wheels. Do you mean factory wheels or repops ?? Just curious...

Frank

That just tells me its a 14 x 7 rim shell. Look above the valve stem on the front side , there should be a number stamped there and on both sides of the valve stem. Plus a star Chrysler stamp near the valve stem.

I believe I stand corrected, I checked the wheel after you questioned my post. It must be an aftermarket wheel no pentastar stamp on it. If you know 14" SBP wheels I'm satisfied with the wheels. I've been searching for them for about 6 months, (still looking for 2 5 1/2" wide for the front) very difficult to come by any wheel wider than the factory 4 1/2" width original to 90% of cars.

14x5 1/2 steel wheels were what Darts and Barracudas had before Rallye wheels came out in 1970. There are probably plenty out there but they just look like "regular" steel wheels. All my 70 Darts started life with black steel rims, does somebody know when they went from body color to black?

The standard SBP 14" wheel was 4-1/2" wide. Much more common than the wider wheel.
The big wheel was 5-1/2" wide, standard on Formula S, 340 Darts, cars with HD suspension , etc. D70 or E70 tires always came with wide wheels.
SBP Rallye wheels were all 5-1/2".
A car with full wheel covers had black wheels, not body color. You could always see the black rim outside of the wheel covers.
Cars with "dog dish" caps got body-colored wheels.
Wheel color is called out on the build sheet.

Being old school, it looks odd to me when I see a car with dog dishes and black wheels. Unless of course it's a black car. Your car, your choice.

Nothing wrong with the aftermarket wheels , I wish I could get a good source for someone that would build good and straight 14 x 7 small bolt steel wheels. There is a market for them , small , but its there.
As far as color , each to his own. I like mine black , with or without caps. Both Dusters in my pic are that way.

I'm putting together a 69 Dart ( was a slant car ) now and planning on going 15" SBP. I upgraded the 9" drum to KH disc brakes up front and 10" drums in the rear. Wheel Vintique make the wheels.

i have a 61 valiant (avatar)....sold the cragers.....going 5.5 steelie in rear with 235/60.....fronts 13x4.5 with 185/70....matching rwl tires, body color with 1961 dog dish.....oh, and new 2" lift espo leaf springs....

Up until mid- 1971, body color with caps and black with full wheel covers.

After that, black only.

I just went down this road.
The car had rallyes on it when I bought it.
It was coded for 14x6 painted wheels from the factory.
That's what I just put on the car last week

Beautiful 70, color looks great on that car! I like the black wheels as well, I considered black wheels thinking body color would be too much gold (GY8) still on the fence.

My '69 Dart, right before I sold it to buy my new '71 Demon. Wish that I still had them both. The Demon had black wheels with dog dish caps.
I have no idea why the pictures got turned on their side.

If you don't mind a b-body.....
15x6 front, 15x8 rear, off my yellow runner, they work on my 62 cause they're black. 67 barracuda caps.

OK, what color were the Rallye wheels available in? 1972 Demon.... I appear to have a set of silver (stock color) and a set of gold wheels, likely repainted, but just checking!

Will be turning one of the sets loose soon as soon as I figure which ones to hang on to....
Thanks!!!
Steve
