A few questions regarding my directionals which do not work at all. 1971 Dodge Dart Swinger.

Is there a fuse for them? Nothing in the fuse block tells me that.

Where is the flasher located? Haynes manual is useless.

Last question, what is this hanging from my lower dash?

Im sure one of the electric specialits will also be helping out, but in the mean time.
Are the 4 way Hazards working at all?
Always start with fuses.
You can quickly test all the fuses, (block under dash, left side) in the block with a 12 volt test light:
Ground clamp on metal.
Key on, not running.
Touch probe on either side of metal barrel fuse.
Should light on Both sides= circuit feeding thru.
If not, fuse prob bad.

That hanging cylinder is either the directional Flasher or Hazard flasher. They make the click sound when the lights flash.

That looks too small, looks more like the time delay. There are two flashers and they are interchangeable. Hazards are powered at all times, the signals must have the key in "run."

You need a service manual. Download one, free from MyMopar.

What fuse services what is detailed in a chart/ listing in the back of section 8 just before the wiring diagrams begin.

4 way hazards also don't work.

All the 20 fuses work including the 3 amp. I found one in the toolbox left over from my 1977 Mustang II Cobra II.:poke:

You'll want to get the correct fuse for the instrument lamps. The turn signal relay is usually clipped to a bracket behind the dash ash tray. It's a can (metal or plastic) about an inch in diameter and approx 3/4" long with 2 wire terminals at 90 degrees from each other. There were some aftermarket flashers with a different shape that don't fit in the factory bracket, so, YMMV.

Do your brake lights work?
When you turn the signal on do any of the lights come on (front, rear, dash) and not blink?

Alan

In your pic is the time delay relay for the ignition switch light on the column. Part of the AO1 light group.
T/S flasher is on the right side of the ash tray housing.
EM flasher is on the left side of the column.

Brake lights do work. Nothing comes on when turn signals are on.

EM flasher is on the left side of the column.
Thanks, I'll start digging around.

Do you have A/C? if so, yeah, it's a bit of a pain to get to the back side of the dash there in the middle. Sometimes it's just easier to drop the A/C outlet vent plenum to get access. If you don't have A/C, it should be fairly easy to get to the flasher.

Yeah, pull the A/C vent that hangs under the dash. That makes things a lot easier. Just three 7/16 nuts (IIRC) in blind holes holding it on. I use a deep 1/4" drive socket and short extension to get to them. There's also a plastic duct connector between it and the heater/A/C box.

You are half way there then, either the flasher or the turn signal switch, I'd guess the flasher.
Although the turn signals and brakes you the same elements on the bulbs they have separate feed up the column.

On a side note.

  1. Did the turn signals ever work
  2. Did the e flashers ever work
  3. If the answer to 1 or 2 was yes what was done to the car?
  4. Have you changed your bulbs to LED

Just bought the car two weeks ago. Neither T/S nor the E/F worked. I do have LED headlights, not sure on the turn signals though.

LED brake and front turn signal lights will cause some flasher units to not function correctly.

There are many reasons why the TS are not working.

you need to get a wiring diagram as mentioned earlier.

Something you can do at this moment is with the key in the run position, headlights off, brake not applied, turn the TS switch to one side. If the brake light on the side you turned the switch to lights then that is a clue. Check the front turn signal on the same side also. Repeat for the other direction

Then report back

Agree. Put in a set of 1034 or 1157 bulbs, whichever is called out in the shop manual for your year and model.
Yes people subsitute 1157 for 1034 but the current draw isn't quite the same which effects the rate of flashing.

If the hazzard is easy to access, as shown in the linked thread, use a voltmeter to see if it is getting power. Hazzard switch should be hot all the time so when its on there should be power at the flasher unit input terminal. Go from there.

The flasher units themselves are normally closed switches. Then electric current flows through, it heats the bimetal which then bends opening the connection. So with no current, haz switch on, there should be battery voltage on the output terminal of the flasher unit. If not, the bimetal is stuck open. If so, then its not the flasher unit.

None of the lights are LED except the headlights so I can rule that out.

Does this look like the E/F the three pink wires go to? It's actually square, not round. If so does it just pull out of it's holding spot? I tried "gently" pulling on it but it didn't want to come out. Not easily accessible with all the other wires in the way.

Sorry, I don't see a ef there. It should be round, just like the turn signal flasher. Both are held in by a thin strap bent in the shape of a U, with sharp inside edges to push the flasher into, thats what holds it. Ef should be on the left side of steering column up under the dash. The tf over by the ash tray, should be able to reach around the bottom of the dash to find it. Or, take the screws out of the glove compartment and move to see it. Just like the pictures above, that is exactly where they are and what they look like. Wiggle the flasher to pull it out. Most people used to just leave them hang and rattle around.

There are some aftermarket flashers that are cube shaped and some that are a round cylinder, but, 3 times longer than the stock ones. Some have plastic housings too. You mainly need to find the correct wires, or, if the flasher bracket is still mounted in the stock location, and there's a unit mounted in the bracket, that's probably it, regardless of what it looks like.

Ya thats it. With the pink wires going to it. Its a square one. Just yank it out of there.
I'm kind of wondering if the factory used the square #175 flasher for the EM. Been seeing a lot of them there.
The factory wiring diagrams show them as round.
