Hey guys.
So my Dad comes over for Thanksgiving and tells me one of my winter tires for my F150 that I have stored at his house exploded. I laughed it off thinking he was joking, so we go over to check it out.
I could not believe it when I saw it lol.
I rolled these tires into his house this spring they where great condition, not overinflated, stored in a nice cool locked location.
Anyone ever have this happen?
They are Toyo Open County .
I dont feel safe replacing and running the other 3.

How old are they? What is the date stamp? There are a lot of open country on the road here and I have never heard of any problems like yours. Thats concerning. Keep us updated.

Doesn't matter what they look like. What is the DOT date code?
I will look tomorrow.
 
I had that happen at the tire shop when they were installing new tires on my duelie. It was the last tire to be put on. It hade a different dot number than the other 5. They found another matching dot to install. I was still a little leary but never had a problem. Kim
 
Tires ain't what they used to be.

I've had several "bust belts" sitting inside over the past 10 years.

Before that I don't think I ever had that experience over the course of 30 plus years.
 
Had that happen to both tires on the Sunny side of a tandem axle enclosed trailer. Sun rotted in the intense Florida sun, pieces of tires 10 feet away from the trailer. Surprised they both blew out at the same time. Walked out there and was like WTH . . .

4 new tires and rims took care of the problem from Northern Tool.

Like YY1 says: tires ain't what they used to be.
 
Multiple brands.

I'd love to here about ones that don't.

...and don't get me started about trailer tires.

Seems like you get about six months before they develop serious checks.

Fortunately they don't seem to explode like car tires, though and run with those severe checks for quite a while.
 
Dad had a horse trailer and his flats were usually punctures like nails or something. He said the flats were always found on the rear of the tandem two. According to him, the first tire set the nail up, and the second tire following behind received the damage. Nice theory, who knows? (something for Myth Busters to sort out).

I have been told that by tire guys. Then I went to 10 ply on the steel 6 horse gooses and rarely blew a tire.
The usual reason for trailer tire failure I think is lack of air pressure.
Then I went to aluminu
m and hardly ever blew a tire!
56 years experience with such.
 
I've had 3 old and dry rotted tires explode like that. Always on stuff that sits around a lot. I need to take 2 of them to the tire store and get them removed. If they weren't on vintage mag wheels I want to save, I'd do it myself. The other one is on my wood splitter that never leaves the yard.
 
I had a camper tire blow out last year.
It was 2 years old, it blew about 2 miles from house, leaving on a trip.
Air pressure was checked before we left, when it blew, it pushed the heater out of its space, ripped the plastic fender flare to shreads, ($200 to replace), and tore the steps up.
SOB, tires are not what they used to be. China junk the dealer put on.
Put the spare on, and made it to camp, and back home.
Replaced them with USA made trailer tires, before ever using it again, the tires were cheaper than the damn fender flare.
The new tires are Goodyear Assurance.
 
My truck tire guy told me cheap materials assembled by unskilled labor causes most tire defects.

After several tire failures on my bif truck I switched to Michelin and never looked back.

Even their retreads lasted over 200,000 miles.
 
Had a flat on the Good Years that came on my Ram. Tire shop said a weak spot in the tire developed a bubble that finally wore through. I replaced them with Hankook's.
 
I was sitting at a light and the front right tire blew, just POP-Pssssssssss. Very strange. wheeled it into the gas station and changed it. Sidewall blew out. Of course this tire was crap to begin with back in 85. If it looks like this dont drive on it...far!
